The Philadelphia woman who was shown being abducted in surveillance video taken last Sunday has been found alive and without serious physical harm.
ABC News reports that Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives agents discovered 22-year-old Carlesha Freeland-Gaither inside a parked car in Jessup, MD, on Wednesday along with her alleged kidnapper, Delvin Barnes, 37.
Video posted on Nov. 3 shows Barnes grabbing Freeland-Gaither and dragging her into his car just blocks away from her home.
The man was identified thanks to tips from the public and his use of Freeland-Gaither’s bank card at an ATM in Maryland on Tuesday, according to CNN. What really got police on Barnes’ trail, though, is that his car dealer recognized him in one of the released videos.
Investigators were then able to track the GPS in Barnes’ car to determine his location.
Freeland-Gaither was treated for minor injuries, but Ed Hanko, the head of the Philadelphia FBI field office, described her as being “in good shape.”
Barnes had an outstanding warrant for attempted capital murder in Virginia and is also accused of kidnapping, raping and burning a 16-year-old girl there in early October.
That unnamed teen managed to escape naked, burned and bleeding to a store two miles from Barnes’ house two days after she was reported missing.
According to police, she had been covered with gasoline and bleach and lit on fire, resulting in third-degree burns.
Police speculate that Barnes did not know either of the two victims before kidnapping them.
Currently, he is being held in Baltimore County, MD, and is scheduled for a bail hearing to take place over video call on Nov. 6.
Philadelphia Police Commissioner Charles Ramsay said,
He’s a thug and this is what he does apparently. People like this, there’s nothing that makes sense.
Barnes is expected to face federal charges in court on Thursday.
