Is Bitcoin Really Illegal in Thailand?

Bitcoins1

Earlier this week, Thailand’s national bank ruled Bitcoin illegal. The news came as a shock to many who use the virtual currency, especially those who are not Thai, and the ruling left people wondering: Can the bank make laws?

The answer is “yes and no.” Bitcoin exchange services in Thailand weren’t actually declared “illegal,” per se, but Bitcoin Co. Ltd. — the company this news originally came from — has been operating in Thailand without a license, which is illegal.

Any type of currency exchange service in Thailand needs to get a license from the Bank of Thailand, according to the Exchange Control Regulations in Thailand whether it’s “real” money or not. That’s why Bitcoin Co. Ltd. needed to be authorized to operate, and since it didn’t have that authorization, it was forced to shut down.

Prasan Trairatworakun, Bank of Thailand’s governor, says that the bank hasn’t approved Bitcoin Co. Ltd. to do business in Thailand because the transactions that the company is involved in center around the exchange rate but are not an actual currency exchange (since Bitcoin is not a physical currency).

Of course, this is something really new for Thailand and the explanation Prasan gave comes from old laws because we don’t have any rules to support electronic currencies. Therefore, since there are no applicable laws that can control or tax Bitcoins, they are de-facto illegal (for now).

However, the Bank of Thailand isn’t just ignoring this matter. It’s working with the relevant authorities such as the Ministry of ICT and the Securities and Exchange Commission to sort this out. Using Bitcoin in any way within the Kingdom of Thailand is banned for now, but if Bitcoin Co. Ltd. has proof that this digital crypto-currency has legally operated in other countries without interfering with the real-money exchange system, the Bank of Thailand might reconsider its ruling.

18 Things You Probably Didn"t Know About "Thor"

1. Several infamous Marvel artifacts can be seen in the Asgard weapons vault scene:

The Orb of Agamotto

The Eternal Flame

the Tablet of Life and Time

The Infinity Gauntlet

The Casket of Ancient Winters

2. At one point, Dr. Selvig mentions a colleague doing work with S.H.I.E.L.D.. He described the colleague as “a pioneer in gamma radiation.” He’s talking about Bruce Banner, whose experiments with gamma radiation gave him the ability to transform into the Hulk.

3. There’s also a deleted scene in which Dr. Selvig mentions Hank Pym, also known as Ant-Man.

4. Stan Lee said he wanted to play Odin.

5. Jim Carrey was considered for the role of Loki. He actually played Loki before in The Mask.

6. S.H.I.E.L.D. agents initially think that the Destroyer belongs to Tony Stark. In the comic books, Tony Stark actually does acquire Destroyer armor from Asgard.

7. The Norwegian village seen in the flashback in Thor is the same village seen at the beginning of Captain America: The First Avenger.

8. At one point, Jane lends Thor a shirt that she said belonged to an old boyfriend with a forgotten name tag on it that reads “Donald Blake M.D.”. Dr. Donald Blake is Thor’s alter-ego in the comic books.

9. “Puente Antiguo”, the small town in which most of the movie is set, translates to “old bridge”. This is likely a hint at the towns role as a destination for gods using the Bifrost bridge.

10. In the background of one scene in the small town, you can see a water tower that says “Welcome. Home of the Vikings.”

11. One billboard for New Mexico tourism seen in the background of one shot featured the slogan “Land of Enchantment – Journey into Mystery”. “Journey into Mystery” was the original Marvel comic book that Thor debuted in.

12. One of the most respected writers of the “Thor” comics, J. Michael Straczynski, tries to lift Mjolnir in a cameo.

13. Stan Lee, who created Thor, also makes a cameo as the truck driver who attempts to tow Mjolnir out of the ground.

14. Yet another Thor writer/artist, Walter Simonson, makes a cameo sitting next to Sif during the banquet scene.

15. Marvel sent director Kenneth Branagh the complete collection of the Thor comics to prepare him for directing the film.

16. Tom Hiddleston couldn’t stand wearing Loki’s helmet, and claimed that he channeled that discomfort into the role.

17. There were actually three physicists from the Science & Entertainment Exchange on staff for the film to provide scientific background. Their suggestions led to Jane Foster’s profession being changed to to a physicist, as well as the use of the term “Einstein-Rosen bridge” to describe the Bifrost.

18. One scene in the film was actually directed by Joss Whedon. (The post-credits scene, which tied this film to The Avengers.)

Carney defends Obama on shady Bergdahl prisoner swap: ‘It was the right thing to do’

This afternoon, Jay Carney defended the White House’s decision to exchange five Taliban leaders for suspected deserter Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl:

“It was absolutely the right thing to do, for the commander in chief, for this administration to take action to secure his release, the last prisoner of war from the Afghanistan and Iraq wars.”

Asked whether Obama stands by National Security Adviser Susan Rice’s claim Sunday that Bergdahl served with “distinction,” Carney said the president “stands by actions that he took as commander in chief” to secure his release.

Welp, there you have it. If you’re Barack Obama or one of his pals, all you have to do is declare that you’re doing “the right thing,” and you can pretty much get away with whatever you want.
