1. British actor Bob Hoskins has died of pneumonia at the age of 71.

His family said in a statement: “Bob died peacefully at hospital last night surrounded by family, following a bout of pneumonia.
“We ask that you respect our privacy during this time and thank you for your messages of love and support.”
2. Hoskins announced his retirement from acting in 2012 after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.

3. The British actor was born in Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk in 1942 and began acting in the late 1960s.

His major breakthrough came when he starred alongside Helen Mirren in 1980’s The Long Good Friday.
He later won the BAFTA for Best Actor and a Golden Globe and was nominated for an Oscar for his performance in crime drama Mona Lisa, alongside Sir Michael Caine and Robbie Coltrane.
4. He also starred in family favourites such as Who Framed Roger Rabbit and Super Mario Bros.

5. In 1990 he starred in Mermaids, alongside Cher, and a year later appeared as Smee in Steven Spielberg’s Hook.

6. Twenty years later he won an International Emmy for his performance in BBC1’s The Street.

7. When he stepped away from acting in 2012, his agent said Hoskins was “looking forward to his retirement with his family”.
