Obama: Iran Must Freeze Nuclear Program For At Least A Decade

In an interview, President Obama says Iran must halt and dial back its nuclear program for “double-digit years” if it ever hopes to reach a deal to ease sanctions.

President Obama told Reuters in an interview Monday that Iran must halt its nuclear program for at least a decade if it ever hopes to see sanctions ease.

Obama’s comments came ahead of a March deadline for a framework on a final agreement with Iran over its nuclear program, and one day before Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addresses Congress, who opposes the deal.

“If, in fact, Iran is willing to agree to double-digit years of keeping their program where it is right now and, in fact, rolling back elements of it that currently exist … if we’ve got that, and we’ve got a way of verifying that, there’s no other steps we can take that would give us such assurance that they don’t have a nuclear weapon,” Obama told Reuters.

Arch-rival Israel and other critics of the potential deal say the U.S. is too eager to enter into an agreement at the risk of allowing Iran to eventually develop nuclear weapons.

The White House has denied reports that a potential deal would allow Tehran to slowly ramp up its nuclear program after the freeze.

Speaking to Reuters at the White House, Obama said the goal is to make sure “there’s at least a year between us seeing them try to get a nuclear weapon and them actually being able to obtain one.”

Obama’s comments appeared carefully timed ahead of Netanyahu’s planned speech to Congress opposing a potential deal with arch-rival Iran.

The president criticized Congress for hosting the speech just two weeks before Israel holds its election because “it makes it look like we are taking sides.”

Netanyahu, for his part, has defended his decision to accept the invitation of Republican leaders to talk as an important chance to lobby on behalf of his nation as talks on a potential deal with Iran gain possible steam.

Despite hears in Israel that Netanyahu’s speech might harm U.S.-Israel ties, Obama on Monday told Reuters that he didn’t think it would be “permanently destructive.”

Obama also criticized a plan by some in Congress to impose additional sanctions on Iran if a deal isn’t reached by June 30.

“I’m less concerned, frankly, with Prime Minster Netanyahu’s commentary than I’m with Congress taking actions that might undermine the talks before they’re completed,” he said.

IDF @IDFSpokesperson

In the past half hour, more than 10 rockets were fired at Israel.

BF_STATIC.timequeue.push(function () if (BF_STATIC.bf_test_mode) localStorage.setItem(‘tweet_posted_date’, ‘Fri Aug 08 05:39:40 +0000 2014’); ); BF_STATIC.timequeue.push(function () if (BF_STATIC.bf_test_mode) localStorage.setItem(‘utc_posted_date’, ‘Fri Aug 08 05:39:40 +0000 2014’); ); BF_STATIC.timequeue.push(function () ); BF_STATIC.timequeue.push(function () document.getElementById(“update_tweet_posted_time_3551736”).innerHTML = UI.dateFormat.get_formatted_date(‘Fri Aug 08 05:39:40 +0000 2014’, ‘tweet’); );

6. In response, the Israeli military carried out airstrikes against “terrorist infrastructure in Gaza,” according to an Israel Defense Forces spokesman.

IDF @IDFSpokesperson

In response to the renewal of rocket fire by Gaza terrorists at Israel, we are striking terror sites in Gaza.

BF_STATIC.timequeue.push(function () if (BF_STATIC.bf_test_mode) localStorage.setItem(‘tweet_posted_date’, ‘Fri Aug 08 07:46:25 +0000 2014’); ); BF_STATIC.timequeue.push(function () if (BF_STATIC.bf_test_mode) localStorage.setItem(‘utc_posted_date’, ‘Fri Aug 08 07:46:25 +0000 2014’); ); BF_STATIC.timequeue.push(function () ); BF_STATIC.timequeue.push(function () document.getElementById(“update_tweet_posted_time_3552274”).innerHTML = UI.dateFormat.get_formatted_date(‘Fri Aug 08 07:46:25 +0000 2014’, ‘tweet’); );

Confirmed: Following renewed terrorist aggression against #Israel, #IDF carried out airstrikes against terrorist infrastructure in #Gaza

According to a witness, there was “a huge explosion and a plume of smoke” in Gaza City Friday following the Israeli air strike, Reuters reports. The Associated Press further reported that Israeli strikes resumed Friday “across Gaza.”

10. Friday’s round of hostilities began when at least two rockets from Gaza landed in an open field. They did not cause injuries or damage, the Associated Press reports.

Hamas denied it was responsible for the strikes. Islamic Jihad, along with another faction, later claimed responsibility, the Washington Post reports.

The rocket fire came at the end of a day in which mediators in Cairo had tried to get both sides to extend the cease-fire, which began Tuesday. An official told the AP that Hamas decided not to extend the cease-fire because Israel rejected all of its demands.

11. The rocket attacks continued as the morning continued, with as many as 18 were eventually being fired toward Israel.

Peter Lerner @LTCPeterLerner

Since 08:00, over 18 rockets were launched from #Gaza. 2 were intercepted above Ashkelon, 14 hit open areas, 2 landed short in Gaza.

BF_STATIC.timequeue.push(function () if (BF_STATIC.bf_test_mode) localStorage.setItem(‘tweet_posted_date’, ‘Fri Aug 08 06:47:11 +0000 2014’); ); BF_STATIC.timequeue.push(function () if (BF_STATIC.bf_test_mode) localStorage.setItem(‘utc_posted_date’, ‘Fri Aug 08 06:47:11 +0000 2014’); ); BF_STATIC.timequeue.push(function () ); BF_STATIC.timequeue.push(function () document.getElementById(“update_tweet_posted_time_3552266”).innerHTML = UI.dateFormat.get_formatted_date(‘Fri Aug 08 06:47:11 +0000 2014’, ‘tweet’); );

13. As the cease-fire ended Friday morning, Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv suspended flights for about 45 minutes.

Dan Williams @DanWilliams

As a precaution against any resumption of Gaza rockets, Israel suspended take-offs and landings at Ben-Gurion Airport between 7.30 and 8:15.

BF_STATIC.timequeue.push(function () if (BF_STATIC.bf_test_mode) localStorage.setItem(‘tweet_posted_date’, ‘Fri Aug 08 04:55:26 +0000 2014’); ); BF_STATIC.timequeue.push(function () if (BF_STATIC.bf_test_mode) localStorage.setItem(‘utc_posted_date’, ‘Fri Aug 08 04:55:26 +0000 2014’); ); BF_STATIC.timequeue.push(function () !isIE8()) document.getElementById(“update_tweet_posted_time_3551626”).setAttribute(‘title’, ‘Time posted: ‘ + UI.dateFormat.get_formatted_date(‘Fri Aug 08 04:55:26 +0000 2014’, ‘UTC’) ); ); BF_STATIC.timequeue.push(function () document.getElementById(“update_tweet_posted_time_3551626”).innerHTML = UI.dateFormat.get_formatted_date(‘Fri Aug 08 04:55:26 +0000 2014’, ‘tweet’); );
