Elderly lady’s letter to the White House warned against JFK’s Dallas trip 3 weeks before he died

Less than a month before John F. Kennedy’s fatal trip to Dallas, the White House press secretary Pierre Salinger received this warning from Mrs. Nelle M. Doyle, a very (and in hindsight, reasonably) concerned resident of Dallas…

Warning Letter to JFK

The assassination of McKinley mentioned in this note took place in 1901, more than 60 years earlier. But judging by the shaky yet careful signature, it seems quite possible that Mrs. Doyle may well have been old enough to have been writing from her own personal memory of McKinley’s demise.

Salinger responded, saying that he appreciated her concern, but that “it would be a most unhappy thing if there were a city in the United States that the President could not visit.”

Most unhappy, indeed.
