Price Is Biggest Factor for Smartphone Buyers

Forget screen size and processor speed — price makes a bigger difference than anything else for smartphone buyers, a new study suggests.

In a survey released Thursday by Qualcomm — containing some questions submitted by Mashable — about 71% of survey respondents said they influenced by prices and promotions when selecting their next smartphone, compared to just 50% who use screen size as a determining factor.

Battery life was at the top of the list, with 68% of respondents saying that influenced their buying decision, with a fast-speed connection coming in as the third most important factor when picking a new smartphone with 63% of respondents saying they take data speed into account when choosing the newest device for their pocket.

Interesting to note, however, that half of the people who said they had a “4G” data connection on their phone couldn’t tell you what kind of connection -– LTE or HSPA+ — their device was using. So while customers know fast data speeds are important, they don’t necessarily know fast data speeds when they see them.

The study also looked at how people use phones once they have them: “This survey reinforces that mobile devices are at the heart of virtually everything we do,” said Tim McDonough, vice president of marketing for Qualcomm.
