Most New Yorkers live in Brooklyn or Queens. Now, they finally have a mayor who does too

The above chart shows how the five boroughs of New York City have changed in population in each consecutive census. The trend has been rapid erosion in Manhattan’s share of the population and growth in the outer boroughs but *especially* in Brooklyn and Queens. That was already in progress when the boroughs consolidated politically in 1898, but even then Manhattan had a majority of the city’s people. That’s no longer even close to true.


And yet, it’s been 35 years since a non-Manhattanite was mayor. The last outer borough resident to win the office was Brooklynite Abe Beame, who served from 1974-77; the last before him was William O’Dwyer, also from Brooklyn, who served from 1946-1950. Now, Bill de Blasio, who lives in Park Slope, Brooklyn, is set to break Manhattan’s streak when he’s inaugurated on January 1.
