“The only heart I could find! Be strong!”
1. The 12-year-old Wisconsin girl who survived the brutal “Slender Man” stabbing in May has received hundreds of purple heart cards made by well-wishers across the world.
Her family had asked people to send the 12-year-old girl homemade purple hearts to blanket the walls of her room as she recovered. The young girl, whose name has not been released publicly, was stabbed 19 times by two classmates who said they wanted to please the fictional online character “Slender Man.”
Since then, the family says they have received hundreds of purple hearts from people across the world.
“The little girl and her brother open up the hundreds and some days thousands of packages sent to the family from generous people from all over the world,” Stephen Lyons, the family’s spokesperson, told ABC News. “It’s therapeutic and something she and her brother do every day.”
2. This month, she received a military Purple Heart from an anonymous donor. The note read: “The only heart I could find! Be strong!”
Purple hearts are awarded to members of the military who have been wounded while serving their country, or to those family members whose loved one was killed in action.
When informed of this act of kindness, Wisconsin Secretary of Veteran Affairs, John Scocos, said, “American service men and women are also moms and dads, uncles and aunts — brothers and sisters. It does not surprise me that a decorated veteran unselfishly gave this amazingly brave and courageous little girl something from his or her heart.”
3. In a statement, the family said they were touched by this act of kindness and would “like to personally thank the individual, publicly or privately, for the gift and for their sacrifice for our country.”
“The gift really resonates with the family because they are still dealing with wounds, emotionally and physically, from the events of May 31,” Lyons said.
The family released this photo of the 12-year-old survivor holding a thank you note for her supporters and well-wishers.
4. More than 1,000 people have donated over $57,000 to assist the girl’s family in meeting her medical expenses.
The family’s “Hearts for Healing Fund” is trying to raise $250,000 for the 12-year-old’s growing medical costs.
