McDonald's Has An Entire Menu Of Life Advice For Its Workers — It's About As Wholesome As The Food

McDonald’s has launched an entire website that’s full of life advice for their workers. It includes tasty McNuggets like “Take at least two vacations a year.” You work hard for that $7.25 an hour. Treat yourself! They also recommend “singing away stress.” Give it a shot: When bill collectors call, try paying them with a little ditty. Who needs a living wage when you’re working for a thoughtful and caring employer like McDonald’s?

4 College Kids Decided To Try Living Like 1.1 Billion People Do Every Day

What do you think it would be like living on $1 a day? There’s a fascinating documentary about that, and it reveals so much about parts of our world we are usually unaware of. I feel like simplifying my life sometimes, but have never even considered doing it to this level.

Tiny Houses Make A Whole Lot Of Sense For Many Of Us, And It’s No Surprise They’re On The Rise

What’s a tiny house? It’s a house that’s extra small, costs very little to build, and uses a lot less energy to live in. They’re more affordable and often adorable. And if the stats below are any indicator, we might be seeing a lot of more of them in our neighborhoods soon.

Who Would Bully A Firefighter?! The Answer Is Crazy.

Do we still need feminism? Hell yes. And nobody knows that better than the women working in male-dominated fields like firefighting and longshoring, like Liane Tessier.

CHART: Do You Pay A Higher Tax Rate Than Mitt Romney?

Since Mitt Romney has yet to fully disclose his effective federal tax rate, the best we have to go off of is this statement from 1/17/12: “It’s probably closer to the 15 percent rate than anything.” While it could easily be lower than that, it still provides a good way to put the absurdity of our current tax code into context. Two things to keep in mind while looking at the chart below:

1.) The Median net worth of an American family is $77,300.

2.) Mitt Romney’s net worth is estimated to be somewhere in the neighborhood of $200 million.

So, how does your tax rate stack up?

Bill Maher’s New Rules: The New Trend Of People Who Have All The Power Acting As The Oppressed Ones

There’s so much talk about income inequality these days that the wealthiest in our country are starting to get a bit uncomfortable about the tone of the conversation. I think we need to ratchet it up about 20 notches myself. Pitchforks and torches, indeed!

Sexual Harassment, Exposure To Harmful Chemicals, Low Pay. Its All In A Day's Work Here.

I love the old ’70s movie “Car Wash.” Its theme song said, “You might not ever get rich, but it’s better than digging a ditch.” But that’s not so true now. In fact, what’s happening is pretty horrible. See these folks take great risk to tell you how they were treated.

The Sun Has A Bright Idea For A Bunch Of People Who Are Stuck In The Dark

Ever have someone tell you that they work better at night than they do during the day? Or maybe you’ve crammed for a test (or most of them) into the wee hours of the morning? It’s pretty great that that’s an option, but it’s also easy to forget that it’s not for more than a billion people out there. They’re missing one major thing.

This San Francisco Cab Driver Got 1,000 People To Stand Up And Spell Out 3 Words

We’re now almost done with our first presidential campaign since the Supreme Court’s Citizens United ruling. And just as the Supreme Court predicted, the consequences have in no way at all totally corrupted our politics. *COUGH* *COUGH*

Truth is, it’s been a complete and total disaster. So what else do you do when the fundamentals of our democracy are threatened? Well, one San Francisco cab driver organized with the good people at The Other 98% and hit the beach!

Did You Remember To Tip Your Server?

I’ve always wondered how restaurant owners got us to pay their wages for them. When tips are involved, the minimum wage is even lower than it is for everybody else — much lower.

MATH PROBLEM: If BP Made $36 Billion In 2010, And Their Tax Rate Is 35%, How Big Was Their Tax Bill?

There’s a bunch of corporate tax loopholes that allowed BP to pay $0 in taxes in 2010. Companies seem to be really good at not doing their patriotic duty. So some hackers decided to bring that to your attention in the most entertaining way possible.

First, learn what the corporations do when they play their games. Then play their game. (Sorry mobile users, the game won’t work on your phone. Use your tax break to build a mobile app.)

This is my personal favorite.

That’s right, BP ruined a chunk of our country and got a REFUND. Now play the game and see what you can do to stop them.

Click here to see all the fact-checked data, Like Tax Evaders on Facebook, then share this so your coworkers have a good educational reason to procrastinate at work.

I’d Like A Bag Of Fries, A Coke, And This Massive Injustice Sorted Out By The Time I Pick It Up

Hold up, guys: You’re telling me these hardworking people are fighting for $15 an hour and the right to form a union, and there is the threat they may be FIRED for it? Yeah, because it totally makes sense to take away their most basic workers rights. Excuse me while I join these kick-ass people in fighting this fight.

Here Are Some Facts About Global Spending And Money You Didn"t Know Before.

If you ask any of your finance buddies to explain the economy, you’ll likely pass out from sheer boredom. It’s as if they want to make managing the world’s money sound more intellectual than it is. They’ll throw around terms like “long-run average total cost” and “hedonic regression analysis” to confuse you.

We’re here to help. These are the best facts about the global economy that finance people will never tell you. Honestly, these are WAY more interesting and easy to understand than anything shared by your friend at an investment firm.

1.) Greeks keep Marlboro afloat.

2.) Those Christmas lists actually DO get longer each year.

3.) And yet everyone says they hate the French…

4.) I’m surprised they don’t make this a law.

5.) Wait, I need to think this through.

6.) We should all invest in Florida real estate RIGHT NOW!

7.) Go ahead. You can look up what a tonne is.

8.) ‘Murica!

9.) Slackers. Saving their sleepy butts in WWI and WWII.

10.) I hope you never drive in Qatar.

11.) Whoa.

12.) Portlandia, you’ve been beaten.

13.) That’s because it’s too cold to ever leave the house.

14.) And they said America was a sleeping giant.

15.) We have the biggest economy, so I’d HOPE so.

16.) Ugh, is it getting warm in here?

17.) Seriously, how in the world is this quantified?

18.) Free gas! (or not…)

19.) And yet they still dwarf us in population.

(via Izismile)

The next time you’re with your boastful finance friend, drop one of these facts on them. They’ll be impressed and a little scared to condescend someone in the know.

MAP: What's One Thing That Almost Everywhere Else In The World Does Better Than America?

I have a fantastic present for whoever came up with the brilliant idea of punishing sick employees. Sorry … did I say “brilliant”? I meant outrageous. And, oops, did I say “present”? I meant “swift kick to the face.”

Check out this map to see how America stacks up against the rest of the world in providing paid sick leave for employees. The blue countries offer guaranteed paid sick leave. The red countries do not.

Then click the links below the map to show your support for paid employee sick leave by signing the NYC Campaign for Paid Sick Days’ petition to city hall.

Meet The Smarty-Pants Kids Who Stopped Going To Class And The Teachers Were Like, 'That's Cool'

For a lot of us, it’s almost hard to imagine what school would be like without having to sit in class all day, take tests, and answer to teachers. These kids not only can imagine it, they wanna show you what it has meant for them and their development. It looks so smart and fun!

Obviously this sort of self-directed learning wouldn’t work at all schools or for all students, but isn’t it refreshing to see a school giving its students the opportunity to do something other than pass standardized tests?
