Breaking: Hostage Situation In Sydney, Possible Terror Attack

There is an ongoing hostage situation at a café in Sydney, Australia, and it may be the work of terrorists.


Hundreds of Australian police have cordoned off a significant portion of Martin Place, a pedestrian mall located in the city’s main business area.


The situation is developing at the Lindt Café. There is at least one gunman, and varying reports surrounding the number of hostages being held.


Some claim there are at least a dozen hostages.


Other reports contend that a Lindt Australia executive has stated there were about 10 staff members working at the café and around 30 customers.


At one point, several of the hostages were forced to press their hands against the window.


A black Islamic flag was also raised in the café’s window. It is not the flag of ISIS, as some initially believed, but jihadi groups commonly use it as a battle banner.


Australia’s prime minister has said this might be politically motivated.

Steven Sotloff Had Israeli Citizenship And Secretly Practiced Judaism While In ISIS Captivity

Recently-slain American journalist Steven Sotloff had dual citizenship in Israel and still managed to practice his Jewish faith under the captivity of the Islamic State.


According to The Guardian, the 31-year-old’s Israeli citizenship was revealed in a tweet from a spokesman for the Israeli foreign ministry this morning.


Paul Hirschson’s message said,


Cleared for publication: Steven Sotloff was Israel citizen RIP.



The citizenship was kept secret while the Florida native remained in captivity for nearly three years because it very well could have resulted in his immediate death.


Israeli authorities went to great lengths to make sure there was no evidence of Sotloff’s relationship to the Jewish state on the Internet during this time.


Sotloff moved to Israel in 2008 to finish his undergraduate degree at Interdisciplinary Center Herzliya and traveled to Yemen, Libya and Egypt to report for several Israeli media outlets.


He was captured in Syria in 2013 while covering the country’s ongoing civil war.


Most would never dream of observing religious practices as hostages of Islamic extremists, but Sotloff found ways to pray and fast.


A former prisoner of the Islamic State said that Sotloff pretended he didn’t feel well so he could observe Yom Kippur, which requires 24 hours of fasting.


According to the Guardian, Yedioth Ahronoth told Israeli media,


He told them he was sick and doesn’t want to eat, even though we were served eggs that day.



Ahronoth added that Sotloff was even brave enough to pray to the Jewish God when his captors looked the other way.


He said,


He used to pray secretly in the direction of Jerusalem. He would see in which direction they were praying and then adjust the angle.



According to an Israeli journalist, Sotloff was used to hiding his faith, often telling local Syrians that he was raised a secular Muslim and that his eastern European last name was actually Chechen.

Pro-ISIS Leaflets Have Been Handed Out In Oxford Street




Although the leaflets do not specifically cite the militant group terrorising civilians in Iraq and Syria, they refer to an “established” Islamic state.

1. A group of students were seen yesterday handing out leaflets in one of London’s most popular areas, encouraging Muslims to travel to Syria and Iraq to pledge allegiance to the militant group ISIS.

The leaflets discuss the importance of Islamic law, and say Muslims have seven responsibilities, including pledging allegiance to “the Khaleef” (ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi), praying to God to advise him, and travelling to the region if possible.


The leaflet reads: “Muslims with the help of Allah have announced the re-establishment of the Khilafah and appointed an imam as a Khaleef.”


Those handing out leaflets in Oxford Circus were previously students of radical preacher Anjem Choudary and live in Luton, the Evening Standard reported.


4. A Muslim woman, Asmaa Al-kufaishi, said she saw the same group speaking to crowds outside Topshop in Oxford Street on Saturday. She said she did not see the leaflets in question, but told BuzzFeed that the group “didn’t know anything about Islam”.
