Saira Blair
Saira Blair is what every Millennial young adult wishes he or she could be.
At only 18 years old, Blair is a fiscal conservative who was also on the ballots on November 4. She won a seat on the West Virginia House of Delegates, and that’s a way bigger deal than people are letting on.
While I’ll accept that her senator father probably helped a lot, she’s still 18.
She has way more power than most of us will ever have, and the West Virginia public elected her into office.
It’s a lot of trust and faith that the voters instilled in her, and there are five major reasons every Millennial should love her:
1. She changes the stigma that Millennials are lazy
As a Millennial, Saira Blair is dealing with the stereotype that we expect everything to come to us, and that we don’t know how to fight for what we want.
She shows the world that this idea is completely and utterly wrong. Elections aren’t won through laziness; they’re won through hard work, fundraising and reaching out to the public.
2. Blair opened up government to our generation
Most every young adult is aware he or she can vote, and hopefully, the vast majority of our generation is active in elections. The cold reality is, however, we are voting for older adults, middle-aged wealthy people to whom we don’t relate.
Blair being elected into office proved that our generation wants to see adults we understand in office. As a young adult, Blair’s friends are all in college, so she sees the struggles and problems facing us today.
She beat a 44-year-old attorney from Martinsburg, which just adds to the awesomeness that is Sarah Blair.
3. She actually cares about the public
Blair exclaimed on a Facebook post on her election page,
When I made the decision to run for public office, I did so because I firmly believe that my generation’s voice, fresh perspective and innovative ideas can help solve some of our state’s most challenging issues.
She got the idea to run for election when she started noticing that her educated friends couldn’t find jobs, a major problem facing thousands of Millennials today.
4. Seriously, how can you not love Saira Blair?
I’ll be the first person to admit, I don’t agree with all the stances she took on major political issues facing West Virginia and our country, but she understands what really matters.
In an interview with Teen Vogue over the summer, she told them the truth about what’s happening in the legislative branch of the government:
The average age in Congress is 57, and the average age in the US Senate is 62, but with all of that experience, we’ve only gotten more debt and less jobs.
5. She’s a college freshman … like, what?
I can vouch, as a freshman in college, that this is a rough time in anyone’s life. It’s a time of transition, and Blair is an economics and Spanish major at West Virginia University.
She’ll have to defer her spring semester of classes to join her father in the nation’s capitol, where he’s a senator, and she’ll attend the legislative session. It’s pretty freaking amazing.
Overall, I have nothing but awe and respect for Saira Blair, and I wish I had half the dedication and motivation she has. She worked hard, fought like hell and won a major state election.
She’ll be representing a small area of West Virginia, but at only 18 years old, that means more for our generation than we could ever imagine.
