Smallpox, polio, tetanus — we have vaccines for these. We even have a vaccine for the flu.
Vaccines are made to keep us safe from disease and from death. But what about other threats to our safety? How do we keep those under control?
A new ad from UNICEF UK seeks to raise awareness for these questions.
The ad features a badly beaten little boy who enters a pharmacy, seeking a vaccine for violence. The pharmacist hands one over and tells him to take it with a cube of sugar to keep him safe.
Of course, this sequence is in the child’s imagination. He snaps out of it, and the pharmacist is revealed to be an action figure. The child’s face is still bruised, and we can hear yelling in the background.
At the commercial’s end, the following text is displayed on the screen,
Every five minutes a child dies as a result of violence. There’s no vaccine. There’s only you.
This ad follows a recent UNICEF UK report that 340 people under the age of 20 die every day from interpersonal violence (rather than from war).
The ad urges viewers to visit unicef.org/uk/violence to learn more and help.
This commercial will pull at your heartstrings in the most painful way ever, but it will work.
Violence is never an appropriate solution, and children especially do not deserve to be subjected to anything but love.
