WTF: Charging Your Phone While You"re Sleeping Might Make You Fat

Here’s a short list of things science says might make you fat: sitting, the Western diet, sleeping too much, sleeping too little and, the newest edition, charging smartphones.

It’s probably not shocking to see the smartphone blamed for yet another one of our problems — science has already decided that it’s causing cancer and ruining relationships.

If you’re going to make it your overarching scapegoat, why not call it out as the root of your sleep problems?

Researchers at Manchester University have recently announced that the blue light emitted by phone screens disrupts the body’s production of melatonin during sleep.

Melatonin controls the way our bodies metabolize food during sleep, so they’ve concluded that charging your phone while sleeping may result in unwanted body fat.

Here’s the problem: People don’t sleep with their phone screens on. When you plug in your phone for the night, you generally turn the screen off. If a notification appears, the screen only switches on for a few seconds.

So unless you fall asleep with your face directly on your iPhone screen, you’re probably going to be fine.

In the ranking of things most likely to make you gain weight, that half a pizza you ate last night is definitely more dangerous than your smartphone light.
