SPIRE COVE, ALASKA

In this photograph by Redditor Ontonyx, we see Spire Cove which is located within Kenai Fjords National Park in Alaska.

The cove is about thirty minutes by boat from Seward, just past Big Bear Glacier. The cove is notable for its abundant bird life and spires like the one seen above.

Established in 1980, the park covers an area of 669,984 acres (1,046.85 sq mi; 2,711.33 km2) on the Kenai Peninsula in southcentral Alaska. It contains the Harding Icefield, one of the largest ice fields in the United States. The park is named for the numerous fjords carved by glaciers moving down the mountains from the ice field. The field is the source of at least 38 glaciers, the largest of which is Bear Glacier. The park lies just to the west of Seward, a popular port for cruise ships. [Source]

Sigh: Public Policy Polling asks Alaskans if they can see Russia

Sarah Palin can see Russia from her house? The last time we heard that one we laughed so hard we fell off our dinosaurs.

Public Policy Polling has a penchant for appending some curveballs to its polls, but in its recent survey of 890 Alaska voters, PPP wrapped things up by asking if voters could see Russia from their homes, and then copied @SarahPalinUSA on the result.

A more enlightening poll question might be to ask how many voters know that line comes from a “Saturday Night Live” skit, and that what Palin told ABC’s Charlie Gibson was that “you can actually see Russia from land here in Alaska.” Hilarious, huh?

There were some serious questions mixed in there as well, but it’s tough to take any of the results seriously when PPP also asked how well George Zimmerman would fare as a presidential candidate — running as a Republican.
