Watch Water Droplets Travel Uphill

1. This is ordinary water, just traveling uphill of its own accord. See?

2. Here it is in slow motion.

The trick is that the surface is much hotter that the water’s boiling point, so a layer of vapour forms underneath the droplet letting it keep its shape. It’s called the Leidenfrost effect. Then the texture of the surface propels the droplets in one direction only.

3. Scientists at the University of Bath took advantage of this effect to make a maze that water droplets could navigate.

Militants In Iraq Say They Executed 1,700 Soldiers, Post Gruesome Images Online

Militants from the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria said on Twitter that they had executed 1,700 Iraqi government soldiers, The New York Times reports. On Sunday, a string of bombs went off, killing 15 and wounding over 30.

1. The Islamic militant group in northern Iraq that captured two major cities last week has posted graphic photos that appear to show its militia executing captured Iraqi soldiers, The New York Times first reported.

3. The images appear to show the militants loading soldiers onto flatbed trucks, and then forcing them to lie face-down in a ditch with their arms tied behind their backs.

As The New York Times reported, the legitimacy of the images is not confirmed:

The authenticity of the photographs and the insurgents’ claim could not be verified, and Iraqi government officials initially cast doubt on whether such a mass execution took place. There were also no reports of large numbers of funerals in the Salahuddin Province area, where the executions were said to have been conducted.

5. If the claim is true, however, the killings would be the biggest mass atrocity in either Syria or Iraq in many years, surpassing even the chemical weapon attack outside of the Syrian city of Damascus last year, in which 1,400 people were killed.

7. Erin Evers, a Human Rights Watch researcher in Iraq, also expressed doubt that the pictures were real:

We’re trying to verify the pics, and I am not convinced they are authentic. … As far as ISIS claiming it has killed 1,700 people and publishing horrific photos to support that claim, it is unfortunately in keeping with their pattern of commission of atrocities, and obviously intended to further fuel sectarian war.

The news was kept under wraps in Iraq for several days, since last week the government blocked a number of websites, including YouTube, Twitter, and Facebook.

Update — June 15, 5:00 p.m. ET: The government increased security around Baghdad Sunday, a day after hundreds of armed Shiite men took to the streets after Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani called on Iraqis to defend their country, The Associated Press reports

Despite the increased security, a number of explosions killed at least 15 people and wounded more than 30 in Baghdad on Sunday, police and hospital officials told the AP.

One car bomb went off in the city center, killing 10 and wounding 21. Another explosion hit the area in the evening, killing two and wounding five. The third bomb went off near a falafel shop in the Sadr City district of the city, which killed three and injured seven.

HSN Jumped the Gun on Sales of Windows 8 PCs

Hsn-jumped-the-gun-on-sales-of-windows-8-pcs-43f91db7b8

HSN appears to have jumped the gun and offered Windows 8 PCs for sale on its website over the weekend, but the retailer has removed the items.

As of Monday morning, HSN’s site was listing five Win 8 PCs — three from Gateway and one from Acer — ranging from $699.96 to $1,195. However, ZDNet reports that — at Microsoft’s request — the items are now no longer available for shipping until Oct. 26, Microsoft’s official release date.

It’s not clear when the items would have shipped. ZDNet reported that the PCs would ship “immediately,” though The Verge stated that the products wouldn’t have shipped for another month. HSN’s site offered the option of getting the PCs within three to seven business days.

As ZDNet points out, the PCs were loaded with “crapware,” like Office 2010 (a 60-day trial) and Norton Internet Security Suite (also a 60-day trial) as well as other software from Gateway and Acer on their respective machines.

‘He thinks we’re falling for this’? Kasich’s comms team takes swipe at AP [photo]

http://twitter.com/#!/brianrhester/status/524563057138499584

As Twitchy reported, Ohio Gov. John Kasich spent a good chunk of yesterday trying to dig himself out of a hole of his own creation. After the AP reported that Kasich said Obamacare won’t be repealed, he attempted to “clarify” by saying he was only referring to Medicaid expansion. Needless to say, nobody was buying what he was selling:

Clearly Kasich isn’t very good at this whole explaining-stuff thing. Fortunately, he has very competent staff to help him out:

Sorry, guys. But the AP didn’t get Kasich his reputation as a pro-Obamacare squish; he got that all on his own.

Sigh: Public Policy Polling asks Alaskans if they can see Russia

http://twitter.com/#!/HawkinsUSA/status/364530915956891648

Sarah Palin can see Russia from her house? The last time we heard that one we laughed so hard we fell off our dinosaurs.

Public Policy Polling has a penchant for appending some curveballs to its polls, but in its recent survey of 890 Alaska voters, PPP wrapped things up by asking if voters could see Russia from their homes, and then copied @SarahPalinUSA on the result.

http://twitter.com/#!/ppppolls/status/363370361959612416

A more enlightening poll question might be to ask how many voters know that line comes from a “Saturday Night Live” skit, and that what Palin told ABC’s Charlie Gibson was that “you can actually see Russia from land here in Alaska.” Hilarious, huh?

http://twitter.com/#!/gary4205/status/363371263449763840

http://twitter.com/#!/Brand_Allen/status/363370140874076160

There were some serious questions mixed in there as well, but it’s tough to take any of the results seriously when PPP also asked how well George Zimmerman would fare as a presidential candidate — running as a Republican.

http://twitter.com/#!/ppppolls/status/363367327686852608

Out of curiosity, why did PPP have Zimmerman switch parties?

Meet The Dude Who Might Just Have The Poorest Judgment In America. Bless His Dead-Inside Heart.

John Oliver is on a hot streak of publicly shaming people who deserve public shaming. This week, he set his sights on the owner of a football team.

The U.S. Patent Office just announced the Washington team would be losing its trademark for being disparaging to Native Americans. That’s a step in the right direction.

Now if only more people would share this so people could know why it’s a really good idea for a change. Maybe the public scrutiny would teach the Washington team’s owner that he needs a little bit more compassion in his life. (And besides, he could milk the hell out of the rebranding and get lots of good press.)
