Dear Apple, Please Re-Release the Old Google Maps for iOS 6

Dear-apple-please-re-release-the-old-google-maps-for-ios-6-8ea698660aTo: Tim Cook

Mashable OP-ED: This post reflects the opinions of the author and not necessarily those of Mashable as a publication.

Dear Tim,

As a longtime Apple user, I’d like to say a heartfelt thanks for the apology Friday. Your company’s quest for tech excellence is so intensely scrutinized, it can be hard to publicly admit when a product falls far short of expectations.

So it’s really good to know you heard and accept the complaints, and that Apple is committed to making Maps as functional as it is beautiful. I for one cannot wait. But there remains the need for a proper stopgap solution.

Remember what solved the (relatively minor) “Antennagate” problem? It wasn’t just the CEO getting up on stage and apologizing. It was the fact that Apple proceeded to offer free bumper cases. The company looked proactive and generous, and the bumper did the trick. What you need now is the equivalent of the bumper.

You suggested in your letter a number of mapping app alternatives, such as turning maps.google.com into an “app” for your home screen (a method we tried and found wanting here). We all know they constitute an inferior experience.

There’s one far better alternative you didn’t mention. It’s one you already have in your back pocket (figuratively) and that the majority of iPhone and iPad owners still have in their back pockets (literally).

It’s the old Maps app, the one Apple built based on Google data in 2007 and that shipped in every OS until iOS 6.

Please, Tim, direct your iOS team to release it as a free standalone item in the App store, for iOS 6 only, with all due speed. I’ll gladly accept it not being the default mapping app. Let us use it side by side with Maps, and use it as our benchmark for how much Maps is improving.

If there’s any reason you can’t do this, it hasn’t been clearly explained. Google’s chairman has said, and Apple has never denied, that you still have a whole year left on your license to use Google Maps data on the phone. That’s why it hasn’t suddenly vanished for everyone using iOS 5. We still have the right to use it.

The standalone iOS 6 app would only work for the next year, then. That’s okay by us. We know that by this time next year, one of two things will have happened: Maps will have improved exponentially and Google will have come out with an iOS 6 Maps app of their own making. Preferably both.

Is there a problem detaching the Google Maps code from the system preferences, so that iOS 6 knows this isn’t the default map the way it was in iOS 5? I very much doubt that obstacle could detain the programming might of Apple for more than a few days.

Sure, it would be ideal to have the option to switch between default mapping apps. But that’s a bigger fix, a system-level fix, and it would delay the re-release of something for which there is an urgent need.

For your users’ sake, please do not delay. A good chunk of them are afraid of upgrading to iOS 6 specifically because of the Maps issue; this would remove that objection at a stroke.

Meanwhile, many of the upgraded, our confidence in our phones’ navigation skills shaken, are starting to steal longing glances at our Android-toting friends’ maps app. Unthinkable, just a few weeks ago, but true.

Re-releasing Google Maps would effectively restore the status quo ante, allowing us to take a chance on Maps — because we know there’s a fallback for when its information ain’t great.

And there’s something else. In this ongoing and suddenly more heated rivalry with Google, Apple would suddenly look like the bigger company. You’ll be the ones who filled the gap, even at the risk of ceding ground to a competitor, because you care about your users. It would be widely regarded as a heroic and selfless act, the kind of PR you can’t buy.

Google will come along with iOS 6 Maps sooner or later, albeit months down the line, and right now you’re running the risk of it being a huge deal: Google saves the day! Reliable mapping returns to the iPhone!

But if you re-release the old app, Google’s version, however good it is, will seem like more of an upgrade than the second coming.

Some on your team might tell you this is a step backwards. Don’t listen to them. It’s the right thing to do for users. Apple Maps will still be there, will still be the default, will have more time to improve. And in a deft bit of jiu-jitsu, Google will look like a slowpoke.

Sincerely yours,

Seeking Direction in San Francisco

Erick Erickson defends CNN’s Peter Hamby, tweets link to Obama donation page

http://twitter.com/#!/EWErickson/status/247724376223539200

Obama campaign admits WI is in play, but buries the story on their donation page. Gotta go here to see it 1st hand. https://t.co/sZEsPLJj

— Erick Erickson (@EWErickson) September 17, 2012

Today, CNN contributor Erick Erickson defended his colleague Peter Hamby, who tweeted a link to a Barack Obama donation page last week.  Erickson tweeted a link to the same Obama donation page that Hamby tweeted, claiming that the page shows “Obama admits suddenly WI is in play.”

But Twitter users didn’t see anything of the sort. It’s just a boilerplate Obama-Biden donation page inviting supporters to attend a reception with Obama in Milwaukee: “Please join President Barack Obama for a reception with supporters like you in Milwaukee.”

Nowhere on the page does Obama state that Wisconsin is “in play.”

@EWErickson there is no story just donation information

— JPC (@JPC_76) September 17, 2012

@EWErickson @PeterHambyCNN Look again. The tweet contains an ivitation for "supporters" and has ticket prices. It"s still posted.

— Ronnie Brewer (@ronb1968) September 17, 2012

@EWErickson There is NO excuse for Peter Hamby when the link itself read "Donate Obama" not buying it. He should be fired for being incomp.

— KAREN D (@Kazport) September 17, 2012

@EWErickson I really don"t understand why you posted this. Or why you came to CNN Hamby"s defense. Obama donation site is NOT news.

— ★♥ Harriet Baldwin (@HarrietBaldwin) September 17, 2012

@EWErickson @PeterHambyCNN link is to registration for Obama fundraiser, not "news" WI is in play pic.twitter.com/qrJAjfQG

— Becky Thomas (@BeckyThom10) September 17, 2012

Earlier today, Erickson authored a blog post claiming that GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney is losing the presidential election and if the election were held today Obama would prevail. By contrast, a nationwide Rasmussen poll released this morning shows Romney 2 points ahead of Obama.

Update: Erickson clarifies his argument:

https://twitter.com/EWErickson/status/247758482172936192

https://twitter.com/EWErickson/status/247757334808498177

https://twitter.com/EWErickson/status/247756708829618176

We’ll leave it up to readers to decide about Erickson’s claim the the Milwaukee fundraiser amounts to a newsworthy, tacit admission by Obama that “Wisconsin is in play.” Obama has had fund-raising receptions in many states, such as Washington, Oregon, California, and Maryland, that are not considered battleground states.

Obama: Romney Is Worse Than John McCain

MANDEL NGAN / Getty Images

US President Barack Obama speaks during a campaign fundraiser May 14, 2012 at the Rubin Museum of Art in New York City.

President Barack Obama told an audience in New York tonight that Mitt Romney is worse than his 2008 opponent Sen. John McCain.

“We have a very clear contrast this time. John McCain believed in climate change and believed in immigration reform,” Obama told an audience of about 200 donors who paid at least $5000 for a ticket to the event. “What we have this time out a candidate who said he would rubber stamp a Republican Congress that wants us to go backward, not forward.”

For months — and only in private — Obama campaign staffers in Chicago have said they have little respect for Romney because of his shifting positions, while John McCain was the type of principled Republican most like them. Obama has now made those private asides very public.

Obama has attempted to tie Romney to the GOP Congress, a task made easier by tax warrior Grover Norquist’s remarks to the Conservative Political Action Conference in February:

All we have to do is replace Obama. … We are not auditioning for fearless leader. We don’t need a president to tell us in what direction to go. We know what direction to go. We want the Ryan budget. … We just need a president to sign this stuff. We don’t need someone to think it up or design it. The leadership now for the modern conservative movement for the next 20 years will be coming out of the House and the Senate.

“This is going to be a tough election,” Obama remarked. “Sometimes when I come to New York, people say, ‘I don’t know anybody who’s not supporting you, Barack. I say, ‘You live in Manhattan.’”

“Their message will be, ‘You’re upset, you’re unsatisfied. It’s Obama’s fault,’” Obama added. “But I’m not worried. The reason I’m not worried is because of you.”

NYT buries story on IRS bullying conservatives; Endorsed witch hunt in 2012

http://twitter.com/#!/ByronYork/status/333207446879342592

The IRS apologized Friday for singling out conservative groups with “tea party” or “patriot” in their names for audits of their applications for tax-exempt status. Translation: We’re sorry we got caught.

Want to read about that in the New York Times before lining your bird cage? Try page A11.

The IRS targeting a particular political viewpoint for scrutiny is front page news, period. Shame on the NY Times for burying it on A11

Dyson Vacuums Solve a Hairy Problem

Dyson-vacuums-solve-a-hairy-problem-9e8485aeeb

Cleaning up after your pet can be a little messy. Hair gets everywhere and when it comes time to vacuum the floors you spend half your time unclogging your conventional vacuum. With that common struggle in mind, the innovators at Dyson created a tool to tackle those hairy jobs.

The Dyson Tangle-free Turbine tool attaches to your Dyson vacuum and uses two counter-rotating brush heads. The dual heads are what make this design different than the brush bar design of other vacuums. Normally hair can easily wrap around the brush bar, slowing down the roller and eventually needing to be cut or pulled loose. The Tangle-free Turbine tool collects more hair without getting hair caught on the brushes.

A pivoting head allows for constant contact to wavy surfaces, so when you’re trying to vacuum the surface of your dog’s bed you don’t have to worry about missing a spot.

Do you have any solutions to picking up the accumulating dog har or cat hair in your home? Watch the video below and let us know in the comments.

HSN Jumped the Gun on Sales of Windows 8 PCs

Hsn-jumped-the-gun-on-sales-of-windows-8-pcs-43f91db7b8

HSN appears to have jumped the gun and offered Windows 8 PCs for sale on its website over the weekend, but the retailer has removed the items.

As of Monday morning, HSN’s site was listing five Win 8 PCs — three from Gateway and one from Acer — ranging from $699.96 to $1,195. However, ZDNet reports that — at Microsoft’s request — the items are now no longer available for shipping until Oct. 26, Microsoft’s official release date.

It’s not clear when the items would have shipped. ZDNet reported that the PCs would ship “immediately,” though The Verge stated that the products wouldn’t have shipped for another month. HSN’s site offered the option of getting the PCs within three to seven business days.

As ZDNet points out, the PCs were loaded with “crapware,” like Office 2010 (a 60-day trial) and Norton Internet Security Suite (also a 60-day trial) as well as other software from Gateway and Acer on their respective machines.
