Oreo is milking the Mars Rover landing in grand style. The brand, which has 27 million Facebook fans, appears to have another winner with its Mars Rover salute. Posted late Sunday, the picture has more than 18,000 Likes.
The brand scored a similar hit in June with a photo of a rainbow Oreo in support of gay rights, though the response to that one was even bigger — 143,000 Likes. Since June, the brand and ad agency DraftFCB have been celebrating the brand’s 100th anniversary by offering other Oreo-based photographic tributes, which are cataloged on DailyTwist, which is sort of a Google Doodle for the brand. (See gallery below.)
What do you think of Oreo’s latest? Let us know in the comments.

The June 25 post that started it all.

Only July 6, the brand celebrated an event that’s obscure to most non-Britons: The designation of Scotland’s King of the Thistle to Prince William

On June 30, Oreo saluted the start of the grueling cycling event.

Facebook has offered another way to control which activities you’ll share when using apps that interact with Facebook on the web. A new plugin called Shared Activity lets users modify their privacy settings while in a particular web app, giving them control of who sees their activities created on that app in Facebook.
Facebook’s Developer Blog offered an example (pictured at right) of how this new plugin works:
“From the plugin on sites such as Airbnb, people can set the default Facebook audience for activity shared from your app, or manage the settings for stories previously published to Facebook, including selecting an audience or removing it altogether.”
These capabilities are already available in Facebook itself, but now users won’t need to leave an app to adjust its sharing settings. The plugin is complimentary to the current ability to adjust sharing details in three different places within Facebook: in the Timeline itself, in Facebook’s app settings, or its activity log.
This new plugin gives users more convenient control of who gets to see their input. For instance, if a user doesn’t want the general public to see what stories he likes in a certain app, or his comments within it, he can adjust that without leaving the application and going back to Facebook.
Adding another way to ensure privacy on Facebook sounds like a great idea, but do you think this plugin will add yet another layer of complexity for users to navigate? Is it too much?

The far-right party’s social media operation is getting seriously powerful. Whether that actually changes anything is a different matter.

Britain First
The Facebook page of the British National Party splinter group has exploded in popularity during the last four weeks, gaining over 230,000 likes in the last month to take it to a total of 336,000 fans.
That’s mainly thanks to an incessant stream of extremely popular posts that mix Islamophobia with pro-military memes and messages proclaiming love for the monarchy.
All this leaves Britain First, which is standing candidates in Wales and Scotland for the forthcoming EU elections, as by far by the most popular UK political party on Facebook, with more fans than the Conservatives and Labour combined. Even UKIP, which has been crowing over the success of its social media strategy, can’t hold a candle to this lot.
During the last week millions of UK residents will have been exposed to a piece of Britain First content – more than buy physical copies of newspapers such as The Independent or The Guardian in any seven day period.
In total there have been almost 3.3 million interactions with the page in the last week. And each of those interactions prompts a story in a user’s newsfeed, broadcasting the party’s name even further.
And Britain First is continuing to add around 8,000 followers a day.

Britain First could give the other parties a lesson in political messaging on Facebook: they have a clarity of message, use simple designs and rely emotive content.
As for what they’re actually preaching, well that’s another matter. But analysis of the recent posts suggests fans of Britain First are five times more likely to engage with Britain First on Facebook than fans of more mainstream political parties.

The party has already been chastised for registering “REMEMBER LEE RIGBY”, a reference to the English soldier murdered by Islamic extremists, as an official party slogan, against the wishes of Rigby’s family.

Twitter may have a ways to go until it matches Facebook’s valuation, but at least in one crucial segment — mobile advertising — it appears to be besting its larger rival.
A report from eMarketer estimates that Twitter will hit $129.7 million in U.S. mobile ad revenues this year compared to $72 million for Facebook.
However, Twitter’s advantage in the mobile ad space won’t last for long. According to eMarketer’s predictions, Facebook’s ad revenue will grow five-fold to $387 million in 2013, beating Twitter’s take by more than $100 million. This would make Facebook the second highest mobile ad earner behind Google.
eMarketer’s predictions offer some hope for investors who are concerned about whether Facebook will figure out its mobile advertising strategy. As the research firm points out in the report, Facebook only launched its first mobile ad units in June and still has plenty of room to grow.
“Mobile is a long-term play for Facebook, and by next year, eMarketer expects the social networking giant to beat out Twitter by a significant margin, taking in $387 million on mobile in the US.,” the firm wrote in its report. Concerns about Facebook’s ability to monetize its platform as users shift to mobile has bedeviled the company’s IPO. The company’s stock has fallen about 50% since it went public in May. However Facebook’s current $41 billion market cap is still more than four times that of Twitter’s.
Despite investor skepticism, both Facebook and Twitter have already seen some promise in their early mobile advertising efforts. Twitter CEO Dick Costolo noted earlier this year that the company has generated more revenue from mobile ads than desktop ads on certain days. Meanwhile, a report in June found that Facebook’s mobile ads earn two and a half times more than desktop ads.
Overall, eMarketer predicts the mobile advertising market will hit $2.61 billion this year in the U.S. and grow to a $12 billion industry in 2016 due largely to companies like Facebook and Twitter.

Tech giants, including Google, Facebook and Apple, have sent a letter to Congress urging lawmakers to reform the NSA surveillance programs.
The letter, sent on Thursday to top members of the Senate Judiciary Committee, implicitly endorses a specific bill, the USA Freedom Act, which would end the NSA program that collects U.S. phone call records.
Tech companies have been asking for permission to be more transparent in the months following the revelations fueled by Edward Snowden, but this time, they’re taking one extra step.
“Our companies believe that government surveillance practices should also be reformed to include substantial enhancements to privacy protections and appropriate oversight and accountability mechanisms for those programs,” the letter states.
The companies, which also include AOL, Microsoft, and Yahoo, “applaud” the sponsors of the USA Freedom Act (.PDF), which would significantly reform the Patriot Act and NSA surveillance powers.
The bipartisan bill, introduced by Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) and Jim Sensenbrenner (R-Wis.), the principal author of the Patriot Act, was introduced on Monday and lauded by civil liberties groups. The American Civil Liberties Union called it “real spying reform.”
Meanwhile, an opposing bill (.PDF), introduced by Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) was approved by the Senate Intelligence Committee on Thursday. The bill has been introduced to reform the NSA, but it allows the bulk collection of phone records to continue.
For Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.), a staunch supporter of curtailing NSA surveillance, Feinstein’s bill “would codify overbroad surveillance practices that infringe on the constitutional rights of law-abiding Americans without making America any safer,” he said in a statement.”
Tech giants seem to have sided with the former, arguably more ambitious, reform bill — now it’s lawmakers’ turn.

Militants from the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria said on Twitter that they had executed 1,700 Iraqi government soldiers, The New York Times reports. On Sunday, a string of bombs went off, killing 15 and wounding over 30.

As The New York Times reported, the legitimacy of the images is not confirmed:
The authenticity of the photographs and the insurgents’ claim could not be verified, and Iraqi government officials initially cast doubt on whether such a mass execution took place. There were also no reports of large numbers of funerals in the Salahuddin Province area, where the executions were said to have been conducted.

We’re trying to verify the pics, and I am not convinced they are authentic. … As far as ISIS claiming it has killed 1,700 people and publishing horrific photos to support that claim, it is unfortunately in keeping with their pattern of commission of atrocities, and obviously intended to further fuel sectarian war.
The news was kept under wraps in Iraq for several days, since last week the government blocked a number of websites, including YouTube, Twitter, and Facebook.

Update — June 15, 5:00 p.m. ET: The government increased security around Baghdad Sunday, a day after hundreds of armed Shiite men took to the streets after Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani called on Iraqis to defend their country, The Associated Press reports
Despite the increased security, a number of explosions killed at least 15 people and wounded more than 30 in Baghdad on Sunday, police and hospital officials told the AP.
One car bomb went off in the city center, killing 10 and wounding 21. Another explosion hit the area in the evening, killing two and wounding five. The third bomb went off near a falafel shop in the Sadr City district of the city, which killed three and injured seven.

A new online campaign for Breast Cancer Awareness month is upping the ante on traditional methods of advocacy, by encouraging women everywhere to ditch the ribbons and touch themselves, instead.
It’s not quite as dirty as it sounds. The campaign, called ‘Touch Yourself,’ is aiming to promote early cancer detection through self checks for breast lumps. It was launched earlier this month by F Cancer and Women’s Health and Men’s Health magazines.
The concept is easy: Women can use the Facebook app to pledge to perform a self check. Then, they can share a variety of 14 pre-written postcards with their friends, encouraging them to do the same.
“A lot of people are pissed off about the ‘pink’ thing,” Yael Cohen, CEO and founder of F Cancer, told Mashable. “They don’t feel it gives them strength when they’re going through everything. We wanted to give people a different way to interact with cancer this month — a way that was humorous, light and, above all, actionable.”
Cohen founded F Cancer in 2009 after her mother, Diane, was diagnosed with breast cancer. Because about 90% of cancers are curable in their initial stages, Cohen hopes the ‘Touch Yourself’ campaign will stop late stage diagnoses by getting women to detect potential problems as early as possible.
“I mean, we’re all ‘aware’ of cancer. What we need is to start educating and acting on it — give people a call to action.”
Women aren’t the only ones encouraged to partake in the campaign. Seven of the 14 postcards are written for men to share — from the “checker” perspective.
Most of them are humorous: a buff, Fabio-esque guy sprawled out on the beach, saying “I need to touch your boobs. Trust me, it’s for science.”
Others are more direct: “1 in 8 women will get breast cancer in their lifetime. Pledge to touch yourself this October.”
“We had a few that we loved, but decided not to use — thought they might be a little too edgy for Men’s and Women’s Health,” she said. “But they all venture around the same idea: Pledge to touch yourself, pledge to touch me, pledge to touch the random girl you take home from the bar, whoever.”
In addition to encouraging early detection, Cohen hopes the campaign will help change the melancholy stigma associated with cancer by introducing a little laughter.
“We expect cancer patients to be quite solemn, to have this very specific experience,” she said, “It’s awkward, and a lot of times it really, really sucks — but there are some parts where all you can do is laugh.”
Already, thousands have taken the pledge online. The F Cancer website has infographics on how to perform self checks for breast, testicular and skin cancer, as well as information on warning signs, risk factors and statistics.
“The proactive approach is definitely the right way to go,” she said. “I mean, we’re all ‘aware’ of cancer. What we need is to start educating and acting on it — give people a call to action.”
