The Acronym "OMG" Is Way Older Than You Think

The-acronym-omg-is-way-older-than-you-think-e0a35e554c

The older crowd likes to blame the youth for the popularization of text-speak. You know the type: LOL, LMFAO, ROFL, OMG, Totes. Well, it turns out that we’re blaming the wrong people for at least one of those abominations to the English language. “OMG” is almost 100 years old.

The earliest known usage of the abbreviation OMG was found in a letter to Winston Churchill. The 1917 correspondance pictured above is from John Arbuthnot Fisher. The sentence in question reads:

“I hear that a new order of Knighthood is on the tapis — O.M.G. (Oh! My God!) — Shower it on the Admiralty!!” [sic]

The letter was published in Fisher’s Memories in 1919. Fisher, who was a British Admiral, is largely remembered as the driving force behind the creation of advanced capital ship, the HMS Dreadnought. It seemed revolutionary at the time, but actually ended up (temporarily) destroying Britain’s long-standing lead in naval power.

He was also famous for abandoning his posts at the drop of a hat. He resigned from his job as head of the Navy in a letter to Churchill that simply read, “I am unable to remain any longer your colleague … I am off to Scotland at once so as to avoid all questionings.”

There’s no doubt that since the time the letter was written, simple abbreviation has taken on an entirely new life of its own. Added to the Oxford English Dictionary last year, OMG is only one in a line of abbreviations that have become prevalent in everyday speech. Naysayers will even tell you those three letters are going to be (or already have been) the downfall of the English language.

But that’s not the issue we’re tackling right now. Our question here has more to do with what brought Fisher, of stately British naval origin — and, according to the above picture, quite the sourpuss — to inadvertently become the first-ever remembered person to use this phrase. Was it simply an attempt to save time as he ran away to places like Scotland? Or did he predict that tweens the world over would champion his phrase and shout it from the rooftops their texting fingers?

Debate Tweet Cha-Chas Into History

Debate-tweet-cha-chas-into-history-f79a7fb3c3

UPDATE: Mashable community member PresHarryTruman pointed out to us that on Oct. 16, the Twitter account PimpTJefferson sent a nearly identical tweet to the one that Curran sent out on Monday night. It appears that the tweet may have been re-shared by Curran without giving credit to the original author. We wrote about that account here.

Patrick Curran is a college student at Boston University, set to graduate in 2015. He is in a fraternity, Sigma Alpha Epsilon. He has 395 Twitter followers.

He’s just another guy — and a perfect example that anything that anyone posts can go viral on the Internet.

The tweet below, which he sent a few hours before the foreign policy debate between Barack Obama and Mitt Romney, has gone wildly viral. As of 10:30 PM, the tweet has been retweeted over 15,000 times.

During the debate, while the tweet started to pick up steam, Curran celebrated his Tweet’s success.

Thousands upon thousands of retweets later, Curran put it simply:

Selena Gomez Debuts Racier Look in Leaked "Slow Down" Music Video

Seleners

Selenators were in for a treat on Friday, as word spread that Justin Bieber’s on-again, off-again sweetheart’s new music video for “Slow Down” leaked a little earlier than expected.

The song is the second single, following “Come & Get It,” off Selena Gomez’s debut solo album, Stars Dance.

In the above video — which is currently unembeddable via YouTube, but was nabbed by gossip site Perez Hilton — Gomez cruises through Paris in the backseat of a sleek black car, and from time to time, hits the dance floor with some risqué, not-very-Disney moves.

“I just wanna feel your body right next to mine, all night long,” the Spring Breakers star sings. “Baby, slow down the song, and when it’s coming closer to the end, hit rewind.”

Although artists don’t always respond positively to leaked projects, Gomez’s Twitter has so far been quiet about the video’s premature release. For the rest of Twitter, however, it’s a different story.

Yes, there were at least 22 of these at the time of writing:

And it goes on…

(There were also more than 14 of these — I’m getting mixed messages):

The entire Stars Dance album reportedly leaked online, as well:

Stars Dance‘s official global release is slated for July 23 — one day after Gomez turns 21.

Cancer Campaign Tells Women: "Touch Yourself"

Cancer-campaign-tells-women-touch-yourself--b059b77b48

Touch-Yourself-post

A new online campaign for Breast Cancer Awareness month is upping the ante on traditional methods of advocacy, by encouraging women everywhere to ditch the ribbons and touch themselves, instead.

It’s not quite as dirty as it sounds. The campaign, called ‘Touch Yourself,’ is aiming to promote early cancer detection through self checks for breast lumps. It was launched earlier this month by F Cancer and Women’s Health and Men’s Health magazines.

The concept is easy: Women can use the Facebook app to pledge to perform a self check. Then, they can share a variety of 14 pre-written postcards with their friends, encouraging them to do the same.

“A lot of people are pissed off about the ‘pink’ thing,” Yael Cohen, CEO and founder of F Cancer, told Mashable. “They don’t feel it gives them strength when they’re going through everything. We wanted to give people a different way to interact with cancer this month — a way that was humorous, light and, above all, actionable.”

Cohen founded F Cancer in 2009 after her mother, Diane, was diagnosed with breast cancer. Because about 90% of cancers are curable in their initial stages, Cohen hopes the ‘Touch Yourself’ campaign will stop late stage diagnoses by getting women to detect potential problems as early as possible.

“I mean, we’re all ‘aware’ of cancer. What we need is to start educating and acting on it — give people a call to action.”

Women aren’t the only ones encouraged to partake in the campaign. Seven of the 14 postcards are written for men to share — from the “checker” perspective.

Most of them are humorous: a buff, Fabio-esque guy sprawled out on the beach, saying “I need to touch your boobs. Trust me, it’s for science.”

Others are more direct: “1 in 8 women will get breast cancer in their lifetime. Pledge to touch yourself this October.”

“We had a few that we loved, but decided not to use — thought they might be a little too edgy for Men’s and Women’s Health,” she said. “But they all venture around the same idea: Pledge to touch yourself, pledge to touch me, pledge to touch the random girl you take home from the bar, whoever.”

In addition to encouraging early detection, Cohen hopes the campaign will help change the melancholy stigma associated with cancer by introducing a little laughter.

“We expect cancer patients to be quite solemn, to have this very specific experience,” she said, “It’s awkward, and a lot of times it really, really sucks — but there are some parts where all you can do is laugh.”

Already, thousands have taken the pledge online. The F Cancer website has infographics on how to perform self checks for breast, testicular and skin cancer, as well as information on warning signs, risk factors and statistics.

“The proactive approach is definitely the right way to go,” she said. “I mean, we’re all ‘aware’ of cancer. What we need is to start educating and acting on it — give people a call to action.”

Photobomb Duo Tina Fey and Amy Poehler Will Host Golden Globes

Tina-fey-and-amy-poehler-600

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, who anchored Saturday Night Live‘s “Weekend Update” together from 2004 to 2006, are teaming up again — but this time as co-hosts of the 70th Golden Globe Awards on Jan. 13.

During the 69th Golden Globes in January, a moment involving both comedians went viral online. Fey sneaked into the shot — a.k.a. photobombed — Poehler when the camera was locked on the latter during the presentation for Best Actress in a Television series Musical or Comedy.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced the co-hosts Monday night. The Office creator Ricky Gervais, who recently released a voice-centric audio app called Just Sayin’, hosted the show for the past three years. Previously, the Golden Globes opted not to have a host.

“The unparalleled comedic timing of Tina and Amy will surely have viewers wanting to tune in to see them in action,” HFPA president Aida Takla-O’Reilly said in a statement. “The HFPA is thrilled to have the magnetic duo be a part of the show’s 70th anniversary.”

“Tina Fey and Amy Poehler” was a worldwide trending topic on Twitter at the time of this writing.

Fey won the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Comedy Series for her role as Liz Lemon on 30 Rock, which is in its final season, in 2008 and 2009 and has been nominated in that category every year since then. Poehler was nominated in the same category in 2012 for her role as Leslie Knope on Parks and Recreation.

10 Other Things People Want Bill Clinton to Explain

10-other-things-people-want-bill-clinton-to-explain-d9ce6f04b4

Bill Clinton may no longer hold the title of Commander-in-Chief, but his speech at the Democratic National Convention on Wednesday earned him a new moniker: Explainer-in-Chief.

The former POTUS spent nearly an hour on stage explaining point-by-point everything from the economy to education in a bid to convince Americans to vote for Barack Obama in November. At the end of his explain-a-thon, Twitter users couldn’t help but hope that Clinton would take the time to shed a little light on life’s other pressing mysteries.

Will.i.am Is Planning a Fuzzy Robot Invasion

Entertainment multihyphenate Will.i.am is steering his next creative endeavor into hairier territory. Or … fuzzier.

Apparently, after a trip to Harrods in the UK, the musician-designer-dancer-producer was inspired by a toy dog to create a hybrid contraption that’s a stuffed-animal-music-player. Tech implantation ensued: The toy dog, Frankenstein-style, was reborn with a speaker for a stomach and a wireless brain. Will.i.am put a phone in its mouth.

Don’t be fooled, though. This isn’t going to be just another rendition of the other iPhone dogs already on the market. Will.i.am reportedly wants his idea to be more like J.A.R.V.I.S., Tony Stark’s, a.k.a. Iron Man’s, artificially intelligent computer. He wants it to sing. He wants it to dance. But most importantly (and, perhaps, revolutionarily), he wants it to execute household commands.

“I want to be able to tell it, ‘Play this song, download it,"” he told a UK publication. “I want to be able to tell it, ‘Put the next game on Tivo.’ I want this thing to rule my house.”

Will.i.am said he plans to have a version ready to go by the holiday season.

What do you think? Furby reincarnated? Or is this the innovation man’s best friend has been waiting for? Watch the video above to learn more, and then sound off in the comments.
