Two Guys Watch Entire Ten Hour YouTube Video In One Sitting

made history when he uploaded the longest YouTube video ever with just a simple five second clip screaming, ‘Boom Headshot!’ on repeat for ten entire hours. But on the Internet, users always find a way to go another level deeper. Two slacker YouTubers took the brave step, and recorded themselves watching the entire Boom Headshot video in one sitting. There are no words.

Here is the a fast forward, so you don’t have to make history watching a video of two guys watching a ten hour video.

New Record-Breaking Laser Could Dramatically Speed Up The Internet

Using microscopic semiconductor wires positioned atop a silver surface, a team of physicists from Imperial College London and the Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena has produced an ultra-fast laser that dramatically accelerates the interaction between light and matter. This world record-breaking laser is exciting because one day, it could help improve data communication by boosting the speed that information can be transferred, among a variety of other potential applications. The work has been published in Nature Physics.

The secret to this new super laser lies in the physicists’ use of silver surfaces, rather than the more traditional glass. Slim layers of metal are ideal because they provide surface plasmons, which are oscillations of excited electrons that propagate along the surface of the material. When the light interacts with these waves, it can be focused more tightly than normal. The plasmons therefore effectively squeeze the light into a much smaller space. In doing so, the interaction between the light and the nanowires, which are composed of zinc oxide, was greatly enhanced.

By boosting this interaction, the team was able to speed up the rate at which the lasers could be switched on and off to ten times faster than that of a conventional nanowire laser that uses glass. Impressively, these lasers are the fastest on record so far. Furthermore, according to study co-author Robert Röder, they may have even achieved the upper limit in terms of speed at which semiconductor lasers such as this can be operated.

But speed is not the only remarkable feature of these new lasers: they are also stable at room temperature. This means that they can be used in a wider variety of applications, for example as a means to improve communication systems by speeding up data transfer. Another possibility is that the light inside the laser could be used in ultra-high resolution imaging systems or biomedical detectors that operate at single-molecule sensitivity.

“This work is so exciting because we are engineering the interaction of light and matter to drive light generation in materials much faster than it occurs naturally,” senior author Dr. Rupert Oulton from Imperial College London said in a news release. “When we first started working on this, I would have been happy to speed up switching speeds to a picosecond, which is one trillionth of a second. But we’ve managed to go even faster, to the point where the properties of the material itself set a speed limit.”

Explaining SOPA And How It Will Destroy The Internet

Technology buffs and Internet users in the know are up in arms about a recent bill being proposed in the legistalature that could truly change the Internet as we know it. The bill, called Stop Online Piracy Act, or SOPA, would require websites that host or link to other site to be liable for any copyright infringement. Basically, Facebook, Google, Wikipedia, YouTube, Twitter, even ViralViralvideos, would be drastically crippled, or even just shut down completely!  explains the entire bill and the repercussions in this 20 minute presentation.

In Memoriam: Remembering All The Content That Didn’t Go Viral This Year

There is nothing sadder than a piece of internet content that is not voraciously tweeted, shared, and reblogged. Here are 10 lists, articles, and thinkpieces that, tragically, were not able to win the internet in 2014. This content will be in our hearts always.

We will always remember this one as #epicwin and #inspiring, no matter how it ended up.

We will never forget.

This listicle showed a lot of promise, but ultimately “twentyteen” is not a real number, which really hurt the social reach of this one. Tragic.

Nostalgia and Ed Norton GIFs seemed like the perfect combination…this was a big shock to the online community when it didn’t go viral. A reminder that fate can be cruel.

Via Edward-norton.us

This looks good on paper, but once it was put online, it didn’t engage commenters. Sadly, this one never had a shot.

The tough year for Edward Norton-centric web content continued in October.

Zero shares, three likes. But this blog post will not be forgotten.

This one got a few pity faves on Twitter, but that’s about it. It will be remembered fondly.

We want to believe this piece of content is getting faves in content heaven now.

This listicle will be missed.

The Undersea Cables that Connect the World

macro close up of a fibre optic undersea submarine cable and it

Photograph via fopnews.wordpress.com

What you see above is a submarine communications cable. With a diameter of 69 millimeter (2.7 inches), it carries 99% of all international traffic (i.e., internet, telephony and private data) and connects every continent on Earth with the exception of Antarctica.

These amazing fibre optic cables traverse oceans and span hundreds of thousands of kilometers. Below you will find pictures, descriptions and links to much more informative resources about this incredible network of cables that connect our planet.

Map of the Worldwide Undersea Submarine Cable Network

This is a map of all undersea cables around the world. It is a screen capture from http://www.submarinecablemap.com/ an interactive website that let’s you zoom, pan and locate every known submarine cable in the world. Information about the company that owns cable and the various landing points of each cable is also provided.

Infographic by The Guardian (click image to embiggen)

This is the CS Cable Innovator, it is specifically designed for laying fiber optic cable and is the largest of its kind in the world [source]. Built in 1995 by Kvaerner Masa of Finland, it is 145 meters in length (476 ft), with a breath of 24 meters (78 ft) and a depth of 8.5 meters (28 ft). It is capable of carrying up to 8500 tons of fibre optic cable. [source]

The ship has 80 cabins, of which 42 are officer cabins, 36 are crew cabins and two are representative suites. The normal endurance of the vessel at sea is 42 days, but this can be extended to approximately 60 days through logistical support. [source]

For additional information on this incredible ship please visit the following websites:

Originally, submarine cables were simple point-to-point connections. With the development of submarine branching units (SBUs), more than one destination could be served by a single cable system. Modern cable systems now usually have their fibers arranged in a self-healing ring to increase their redundancy, with the submarine sections following different paths on the ocean floor. [Source]

Photograph via imsabbel on Reddit

As of 2012, operators had “successfully demonstrated long-term, error-free transmission at 100 Gbps across Atlantic Ocean” routes of up to 6000 km, meaning a typical cable can move tens of terabits per second overseas. Speeds improved rapidly in the last few years, with 40 Gbit/s having been offered on that route only three years earlier in August 2009. [source]

What are the environmental effects of laying a telecommunications cable on the seafloor? How does it affect the ocean bottom and the animals that live there? Although literally millions of kilometers of communications cables have been placed on the seafloor over the last century, few peer-reviewed scientific papers have documented the effects of these cables on marine life. A recent paper by researchers at MBARI and the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary describes a unique biological survey of a cable on the deep seafloor off Central California. This survey found that the cable had only minor impacts on animals living on and within the seafloor.

In the photograph above we see a variety of marine life living near the Pioneer Seamount cable, which crosses the continental shelf offshore of Half Moon Bay. The animals in this image include several sea stars and basket stars, an anemone, and a number of young rockfish. For scale, the cable is about 3.2 cm (1.25 inches) in diameter. [Source: MBARI]

As of 2006, overseas satellite links accounted for only 1 percent of international traffic, while the remainder was carried by undersea cable. The reliability of submarine cables is high, especially when (as noted above) multiple paths are available in the event of a cable break. Also, the total carrying capacity of submarine cables is in the terabits per second, while satellites typically offer only megabits per second and display higher latency. However, a typical multi-terabit, transoceanic submarine cable system costs several hundred million dollars to construct. [source]

HSN Jumped the Gun on Sales of Windows 8 PCs

Hsn-jumped-the-gun-on-sales-of-windows-8-pcs-43f91db7b8

HSN appears to have jumped the gun and offered Windows 8 PCs for sale on its website over the weekend, but the retailer has removed the items.

As of Monday morning, HSN’s site was listing five Win 8 PCs — three from Gateway and one from Acer — ranging from $699.96 to $1,195. However, ZDNet reports that — at Microsoft’s request — the items are now no longer available for shipping until Oct. 26, Microsoft’s official release date.

It’s not clear when the items would have shipped. ZDNet reported that the PCs would ship “immediately,” though The Verge stated that the products wouldn’t have shipped for another month. HSN’s site offered the option of getting the PCs within three to seven business days.

As ZDNet points out, the PCs were loaded with “crapware,” like Office 2010 (a 60-day trial) and Norton Internet Security Suite (also a 60-day trial) as well as other software from Gateway and Acer on their respective machines.

Should I Get a Nose Job? Ask a Pro

With Christmas approaching, I figured I’d use this week to clean out my inbox a little before I set about eating way too much and drinking in order to tolerate relatives.

Dear Head Pro,

So, first off I would like to say how much I enjoy reading your advice- truly witty genius. I had a question concerning plastic surgery. Where I"m from, like most affluent (JAB) towns, getting a nose job, or any cosmetic procedure for that matter, is completely commonplace. Some definitely could use the help, but others simply do it to just “fit in” or become “prettier” in their opinion. My question is: Is plastic surgery worth it? Or is it better to keep attempting to come to terms with a feature we are not completely happy about? Thanks for all your help Head Pro!

Best,

Natural Betch

Up to you, but understand that doctors sell elective cosmetic surgery as a path to happiness – the assumption being that your huge nose or floppy boobs are the source of your discontent. They aren’t. People, as a rule, are unhappy due to whatever they perceive as their failures in life: Not enough money, not enough companionship, etc. “If I fix my boobs,” so the thinking goes, “I’ll finally get what I want.” False.

Making yourself more attractive might bring you more attention from men, but attention itself won’t make anyone happier, at least not long term. Think of pretty girls who get a lot of attention from guys, a lot of them are still miserable. Attention without substance or qualification is worthless. Being prettier won’t make someone love you, or love you more. It won’t make you a better worker, or more like someone people want to be around. That’s what makes people happier, and a nosejob contributes fuck all in that regard.

Still, it’s your body, and no one’s opposed to the world being a more attractive place.

Dear Head Pro,

About 7 months ago I met up with one of my tinder matches. We met up at a bar with my sorority sisters (in case he was a fucking weirdo) but we ended up hitting it off. Obviously he came back with me and we had sex…twice. We"ve been hookup buddies ever since. I knew what I was getting myself into, even though I really liked him. At first it was always me texting him and asking him to “hang out”. As soon as I stopped doing that a few months ago he has been the one to text me first almost every day – and now not just to hook up but actually to converse. I"ve also blown him off numerous times the last few months when he"s asked to come over just to see if he"ll keep talking to me. He literally never stops talking to me now, texting me and asking to just hang out.. for real. Do you think he still just wants to still be hookup buddies? Do you think there"s even a chance we could ever actually date? If so, how do I even begin to change to that dynamic?

Sincerely,

Tinder Problems.

I suppose the way to see if someone wants to date you would be to accept their proposal of a date and then see how it goes, wouldn’t it? I know, it’s astonishing how the more time a person spends with you voluntarily, the more likely they are to start valuing your companionship.

Why make this into some weird fucking experiment? Why blow him off “just to see if he’ll keep talking to you?” That’s strange. Where’s the value in that? In what way do either of you derive any meaningful benefit? You don’t, which is why this question is fucking stupid. Here’s any idea: If what you’re looking for is a normal relationship, maybe don’t meet people on an app expressly designed for fucking.

Dear Head Pro,

If you were somehow magically granted the choice between having $100 billion, or the ability to sleep with any woman you wanted, which would you pick?

Regards,

Genie in a Bottle

The money. No contest. I’ve seen the same question around the internet, sometimes with the variation that the second option is “end world hunger” or some shit. The answer is still the money. It’s one of those things where people try to make you feel bad about making a selfish choice, which is horseshit. Do you know how much good you could do with $100 BN? A billion is a thousand millions. That means if you spent $1 MM per day, it would take you roughly three years to spend $1 BN. That’s 300 years, then, to spend $100 BN.

Say a family member had cancer. Sure, you could save them with a version of the second option, but if you had $100 BN you could afford to build and staff the world’s largest cancer research facility, with every single staff member dedicated to curing your family member’s particular form of cancer.

I’ve never seen “sleep with everyone” as an option, but I still take the money. It wouldn’t be any fun to know that you could fuck any woman on earth with some Jedi mind trick, not to mention how ethically questionable it would be. I’m pretty sure that if I had a hundred billion dollars, I could lead the sort of lifestyle that would pique Mila Kunis’ interests.

Cartoon Rant About Email

Cartoon Rant About Email

For most people, email has almost completely replaced traditional snail mail. That makes life more convenient, but it also makes things more complex.

Texting and IMing feels almost as natural as a real conversation. But for some reason, relaying the intended emotion and feel in an email is much more difficult.

Web cartoonist Domics expounds on this topic in his latest video which has been trending over the weekend.

The Original Harlem Shake Dance Video

The new outrageous Harlem Shake meme has exploded online. But where did it all begin?

Like most trends online, it’s difficult to pinpoint the originators, but most agree the credit belongs to Filthy Frank who posted DO THE HARLEM SHAKE just over a week ago. He and his friends danced ridiculously to the first 30 seconds of Baauer‘s now famous song Harlem Shake wearing even more outrageous costumes and face masks.

Then, The Sunny Coast Skate crew were inspired to make their own version of the dance, titled The Harlem Shake v1, which incorporates the now standard recipe of one dancer dancing alone until the bass drops. Only then do the others join in on the madness.

Since then, multiple ascending versions of the The Sunny Coast Skate‘s original have been made, including countless other themed parodies of the ridiculous dance, such as the local news version, firefighter version, and even a father-son version.
