Ships known for keeping slaves have been linked to pet food companies. Big ones.

Not all pet food is evil. But some of it might be.

The pet food supply chain is like a game of telephone, only the first player in that game is a sea full of migrants in shackles, often being forced to labor on ships in international waters for years.

“Modern slavery, pass it on? NO thanks!”

Companies known for keeping slaves have been linked to Iams, Meow Mix, and Fancy Feast.

Most of the little fish that go into some pet food are being caught by sea slaves. In Thailand and the surrounding area. On fishing boats that essentially exist outside any known law.

And there are even several pretty intense lawsuits happening. Here’s a peek at one.The solution seems easy: verify that the supply chains aren’t stocked from bad guys who enslave people and break all the laws. But because the ocean has no ruler, someone’s gotta step in. However, first we gotta know about it.

Here are four things to get you started.

1. Know the story behind the people who are being enslaved.

Let’s put the human back into human trafficking.

This is the story of Lang Long, a pet food sea slave.

Lang Long left his family’s rice patch in Cambodia in search of a better life in construction in Thailand. He had to cut a weird deal with a trafficker to get across the border, but it was his chance!

Nope. Soon after arriving, he was imprisoned by armed men and sold at least twice to different fishing boats. Selling a man! Sounds like … slavery.

Even Secretary of State John Kerry is hip to this:

I set it to skip ahead to the part where he starts talking about Lang Long!

Yes. I know it’s not fun to say that word, but we have to call it what it is. This is the selling of people. This is slavery.

Sad fish is sad.

Image via Benson Kua/Flickr.

And your cat’s delicious goodies go right back to Lang Long, sea slave. Worst game of telephone ever.

“OMG nooo!”

2. Know where your pet food comes from.

Ask not what your pet food can do for you. Ask “Where is my pet food even from, and WTF is up with its supply chain?”

You’ll find out what the pet food companies found out. You don’t really know what’s up with the supply chain! See below.

3. Know how much your favorite pet food company cares about this slavery stuff.

Many have good intentions, but they should add “no modern slavery in our ingredients” to the top of the list, dontcha think?

Unfortunately, your cat’s pet food supplier might not yet have a system that keeps it from using sea slaves to feed Fifi the cat.

Why? Traceability. It’s just not possible right now.
The ocean system that enslaved Lang Long is essentially the Wild West in 2015.

“Most fishing vessels are exempt from international rules requiring the onboard tracking systems used by law enforcement.”

Thanks for not poisoning me or the environment, pet food companies. P.S. Can you check on that slavery thing?

However,
things are getting a little bit better:

“By 2020, [Mars, Inc., producer of Iams pet food] plans to use only non-threatened fish caught legally or raised on farms and certified by third-party auditors as not being linked to forced labor.”

4. Know just how much your pet really needs to eat fish (at least right now).

Maybe your pet could lay off the pescatarianism for a bit until these pet food companies get it together?

Fishy pet food might not be all that great for Fifi anyway.

According to a
2013 paper by Kelly Scott Swanson, a professor of animal science at the University of Illinois:

“Often based on consumer demand rather than nutritional requirements, many commercial
pet foods are formulated to provide nutrients in excess of current minimum recommendations, use ingredients that compete directly with the human food system, or are overconsumed by pets, resulting in food wastage and obesity.”

Some pet food companies are actually choosing the same no-fish route.
According to the New York Times report:

“Mars Inc., for example, which sold more than $16 billion worth of pet food globally in 2012, roughly a quarter of the world’s market, has already replaced fishmeal in some of its pet food and will continue in that direction.”

Fifi doesn’t HAVE to give up fish. But at least now you know why she might wanna.

This is a lot to take in, I know! Especially since we’ve been living in the dark about this for so long.

But shackle-free pet food isn’t far away if we all step into the light.

With a simple bit of knowledge, every pet owner can be a part of ending human trafficking.

25 Methods for Killing With Your Bare Hands

[WARNING: This list contains graphic descriptions of techniques for killing.] Sometimes when you are threatened with physical violence, a weapon to defend yourself with is not always available. Your hands, however, are always with you, and can be as lethal as any weapon. Below are a list of attacks that will almost certainly result in death. Remember, these techniques should never be used except in a life or death situation for self-defense.

Techniques 1 – 5

Paris Fight2

1. TEMPLE – A very susceptibile vital spot. If struck with sufficient force, may cause unconsciousness or death.

2. NASION – This is the summit of the nose. If struck with sufficient force may cause death.

3. PHILTRUM – This is the area between the upper lip and the bottom of the nose. Attack to this area may also cause unconsciousness or death.

4. HOOK TO JAW – A powerful hook punch to the front side of jaw may snap an enemy’s neck. Fatal.

5. ADAM’S APPLE – A sharp blow here may cause enemy to asphyxiate.

Techniques 6 – 10

Fight-Club

6. SMALL OF BACK – A very strong blow to the small of the back can cause the backbone to break.

7. TESTICLES – The strong, focused pain of a vicious low blow may cause shock, resulting in death.

8. BASE OF CEREBELLUM – A powerful blow to the nape of the neck, causing mortal damage.

9. COCCYX – A powerful blow to the tail bone. Fatal.

10. FULL NELSON – Stand behind the enemy, put your arms under his, and lock your hands behind his head. Bending the neck forward may either break neck, asphyxiate enemy, or cut of supply of spinal fluid to brain, causing brain damage or death.

Techniques 11 – 15

Geek Fight

11. HALF NELSON – Again, standing behind enemy, but one arm is used to pin one of enemy’s arms.

12. BRAIN BUSTER – Bend enemy over towards you, placing him in a headlock. Grab the back of his belt, and haul him into the air, vertical, upside-down. Allow yourself to fall backward, landing on your enemy’s head, which will absorb your combined weight. Most effective on concrete or gravel.

13. RUSSIAN OMELET – Cross enemy’s legs. Fold enemy by pinning his shoulders to ground upside-down and placing his legs above him. Sit on his legs, folding the bass of the spine. Fatal.

14. HEART PUNCH – A strongman’s attack, it is simply a powerful blow to the heart. (Many years ago, the wrestler Ox killed an opposing wrestler with this attack.)

15. UPPERCUT – An upward strike to the bottom of the jaw with the heel of the hand, causing the enemy’s head to snap backward. May shatter vertabrae. Fatal.

Techniques 16 – 20

Wall Fight

16. ABDOMEN – A substantial blow to this area may rupture a vital organ, causing death.

17. RIB CAGE – A vicious shattering of the rib cage may cause grave internal bleeding.

18. HEAD-TO-WALL PUNCH – A swift, hard, cold-cock punch to an enemy’s face while he is standing near a wall may drive his head into it, causing the back of the skull to shatter fatally.

19. PINNED DROP KICK – Standing behind enemy, holding his arms straight back. A drop kick to the back without releasing arms may severe spine, causing death.

20. HEAD WRENCH – Grabbing an enemy’s head by the mouth and the back of the skull, then twisting with a sudden, violent jerk to rend vertabrae, may easily cause death.

Techniques 21 – 25

Barfight

21. CHOKE HOLD – Once a favorite of law enforcement officials, has often proved deadly. The right arm goes over the enemy’s right shoulder, and grips the back of the head. The left arm comes over his left shoulder, reaches across neck, and grabs own right forearm. With enough pressure applied, causes brain damage or death.

22. HEAD YANK – Bend enemy forward, grab head, and pull back with convincing force. May seperate delicate vertebrae, causing death.

23. EARS – Coming up from behind an enemy and cupping the hands in a clapping motion over the victims ears can kill him immediately. The vibrations caused from the clapping motion will burst his eardrums, and cause internal bleeding in the brain.

24. KIDNEYS – A large nerve that branches off to the spinal cord comes very close to the skin at the kidneys. A direct blow with the knife edge of your hand can cause death.

25. EYES – Use your fingers in a V-shape and attack in gouging motion.

Final Note

300Px-The Scream-1

Attacking is a primary factor. A fight was never won by defensive action. Attack with all of your strength. At any point or any situation, some vulnerable point on your enemies body will be open for attack. Do this while screaming as screaming has two purposes:

1. To frighten and confuse your enemy, and

2. To allow you to take a deep breath which, in turn, will put more oxygen in your blood stream. Your balance and balance of your enemy are two important factors; since, if you succeed in making your enemy lose his balance, the chances are nine to one that you can kill him in your next move. The best over-all stance is where your feet are spread about shoulders width apart, with your right foot about a foot ahead of the left. Both arms should be bent at the elbows parallel to each other. Stand on the balls of your feet and bend your waist slightly. Similar to a boxer’s crouch. Employing a sudden movement or a scream or yell can throw your enemy off-balance.

There are many more ways to kill and injure an enemy, but these should work best for the average person. This is meant only as information and I would not recommend that you use this for a simple High School Brawl. Use these methods only, in your opinion, if your life is in danger. Any one of these methods could very easily kill or cause permanent damage to someone.

10 Things Freshman Betches Should Know

For the betches of the Class of 2018, get ready to be the envy of every frat guy and SWUB (Senior Washed Up Betch). You’re like the new shiny toy all the frat boys want to play with. Like if college was an MTV Challenge you all are the fresh meat. Anyway enough analogies, in addition to sweaty frat makeout sessions (more on those later), your freshman year is also characterized by many, many mistakes. Take our advice and maybe you’ll avoid the Freshman 15 Minutes of Shame.

1. People can see you when you’re “dancing” with your groin attached to some frat bro’s and your lips are suctioned together. Although it seems obvious, when you’re wasted in the middle of the dance floor with the frat star of your dreams, it’s easy to forget that people are watching, and might be judging. JSYK.

2. Don’t drink the Everclear. Seriously. 10/10 times in my life I have blacked out, thrown up, and lost my ability to walk, Everclear has been the culprit. Trust me when I say nothing good will ever come from drinking Everclear.

3. Just because something is unlimited doesn’t mean you should consume it in limitless amounts – the dining hall is not your friend. Whether it’s pizza, Diet Coke, or even hummus, eating unlimited quantities of anything except air is going to make you put on 15 pounds.

4. Find out where the library is, so you know to avoid it.

5. Also find out where the gym is, and don’t avoid it. (See above)

6. Get your fake before you go to school. Otherwise, good luck rolling up at the bar with the same fake Florida ID literally half the freshman class has.

7. You can never have too many tanks. Remember that.

8. You probably don’t need a printer. You just need a friend with a printer. Sure I used one in college, but when I wasn"t spending $6 million on ink cartridges it sat collecting dust and taking up valuable space. Which it continues to do since I"ve used it exactly 0 times since graduation.

9. Every other girl will be wearing a crop top and high-waisted shorts on her first day of orientation. Don’t be that bitch. Protip: Bros love sundresses.

10. Bring some ridiculous, costumey shit (like neon spandex) with you because you never know when the next theme party will be. Actually, you do know. It’s tomorrow. You’ve been warned.

After Seeing This, I Don"t Even Want To Move Anymore. Give Me A Bubble To Live In, Please.

Germs are everywhere. There’s really nothing you can do to avoid them. Sure, you could live in a sterilized orb like Jake Gyllenhaal in Bubble Boy, but that’d be almost as isolating as seeing that movie in theaters. You can, however, limit your exposure to germs. If you want to keep the bacteria in your body limited to the millions that are already there, try avoiding these filthy things that you would typically come into contact with each day, or at least wash your hands after you do so. Check out the dirty two dozen and one!

25.) Doorknobs – Beware of these bacteria magnets, especially the ones in public bathrooms.

24.) Refrigerator Handles – The same people touching the refrigerator handle are also those who you’d find handling uncooked meat.

23.) Vending Machine Buttons – No, this isn’t an excuse to rock the machine back and forth to see if a snack falls out.

22.) Parking Meters – At least getting that ticket seems somewhat like a positve now.

21.) Crosswalk Buttons – Looking both ways won’t save you here.

20.) ATM – Maybe being completely broke isn’t so bad after all.

19.) TV Remotes – What do you expect from something that spends so much time underneath the couch?

18.) Toilet Seats – No surprise there.

17.) Cell Phones – How are these dirtier than toilet seats? I’ve only dropped mine in there like ten times.

16.) Inside Latches of Public Bathroom Stalls – Think of it as one last reminder to wash your hands.

15.) Bathtubs – Really? Even if you don’t occasionally use it as a toilet just to switch things up?

14.) Light Switches – Who would think to clean these things?

13.) Microwave Pads – As if eating pizza for breakfast wasn’t already bad enough for you.

12.) Elevator Buttons – Just what we needed, another excuse for jerks to not hold the door for us.

11.) Mailbox Handles – All of those bills really might be the death of you.

10.) Supermarket Self-Checkout Registers – Where food and money germs meet. Yikes!

9.) Money – Um, I think I’ll take my chances with this one.

8.) Gas Pump Handles – Another one of those things that everyone touches, but doesn’t think to clean their hands after using.

7.) Escalator Rails – Are you seeing this, Mom? I was right for not wanting to use these.

6.) Computer Keyboards – With a browser history like yours, this seems fitting.

5.) Kitchen Sinks – This list seems like it has everything but the kitchen sink on it, until now.

4.) Shopping Carts – More incentive to spend less at the supermarket.

3.) Drinking Fountains – That helps explain why people are willing to spend so much on bottled water.

2.) Playground Equipment – Take note, adult weirdos.

1.) Human Mouths – Yep, your mouth is gross too. You disgust me.

(H/T list25) I never would have guessed that light switches would be on there. I seem to be the only person in my house who knows how to use them. As they say, knowledge that’s been soaked in warm, soapy water is power. You can share this post using the button below.
