Hallmark has pulled wrapping paper from its Hanukkah section after a California woman found swastikas in its pattern.
Cheryl Shapiro was at a Northridge, CA, Walgreens on Sunday when she spotted the blue and silver gift wrap, NBC Los Angeles reports.
Shapiro said,
I couldn’t believe my eyes, I had no idea what to do.
After attempting to express her outrage to her rabbi, Shapiro got the store managers to remove the rolls.
She said,
I told them I wanted this taken off the shelves immediately — not just your store, but national. I was really putting my foot down because I was appalled by this.
The grandmother got her wish, according to the Kansas City Star, as Hallmark had the item removed from all its carriers just one day after hearing about Shapiro’s complaint.
Hallmark spokeswoman Julie Elliott said,
We apologize for the oversight and apologize to anyone who was offended. That obviously was not our intent. It was an oversight on our part to not notice the intersecting lines that could be seen as a swastika pattern.
She explained that the design was derived from a traditional Chinese vase, which features interlocking lines as symbols of good luck.
Shapiro only noticed the gift wrap because it was presented in the store’s Hanukkah display.
The swastika was known as a Chinese character that represented prosperity until Adolf Hitler and the Nazi regime tarnished it during WWII.
Modern uses of the symbol often turn out to be accidental, like when some construction workers from Germany, of all places, unknowingly arranged bricks to form one in a busy walkway.
