Announcing a "Call to Hacktion" for DIY Enthusiasts

Diy-iphone-cases1

We know Pinterest has brought out your crafty side. And with summer officially commenced, we think it’s high-time you channel your inner Tim “The Toolman” Taylor and whip out your hammer, nails and screwdrivers to build something cool. Really cool.

Mashable and The Home Depot are teaming up to issue a “call to hacktion.” Because we know you can make a meat smoker out of a terracotta flower pot. Or maybe you’re more of a lightsaber kind of person? Homemade iPod speaker dock? Smartphone microscope? Perhaps you’re more lo-fi and just want to make a stylish shelf out of plumbers piping and a wood board?

The point is, you can hack some really cool things with typical household items, a little creativity and some essentials, like wood, pipes, nuts and bolts . So we’re challenging you to show or tell us about a real-life hack that uses these kinds of materials.

We’ll be kicking things off at our Social Media Day party on Saturday, June 29, so tweet (with #HDHacks) what awesome, clever and fun hacks you’d like to build this summer. The more unexpected the better, and our favorite ideas will be featured on Mashable.

But don’t think the team at Mashable is getting off scot-free. Our New York-based interns are divvied into teams to build hacks of their own. All of their projects will be on display at our New York Social Media Day festivities, and we’ll be tracking their progress through Vine posts, Instagram pics and YouTube videos, so stay tuned. Here’s what they’re working on:

  • IRL Candy Crush

  • IRL Instagram Filter

  • A GIF Animator

  • Vine Lightbox

We hope you’re feeling inspired, and we can’t wait to see what you come up with. To submit your ideas, tweet it with the hashtag #HDHacks. Stay tuned for Mashable interns’ progress and to see some of our favorite hack ideas.

Happy hacking!

Update: Here is the video of Mashable interns creating their hacks:
