The ISIS Flag Burning Challenge Is The Ice Bucket Challenge Of The Middle East

Three Lebanese men burned the black flag of the Islamic State last Saturday, videotaping the act and challenging others to do the same.

The video challenge was motivated by the militant group beheading a Lebanese army sergeant and kidnapping about 20 Lebanese soldiers, according to Mother Jones.

A Lebanese YouTube user asked the whole world to repeat the flag burning.

In the same style as the recent ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, the user wrote,

I nominate the whole world to #Burn_ISIS_Flag_Challenge. You have 24 hours. GO!!

The campaign has since gone viral throughout Lebanon and could do the same all over the world.

Lebanon’s Minister of Justice, however, has demanded the “sternest punishment” for the flag burners because desecrating a religious symbol is against the law in the largely Muslim country.

The Islamic State’s flag reads,

There is no god but God and Muhammed is his prophet.

But many — including a member of Lebanon’s Change and Reform parliamentary bloc who pledged legal support should the men be charged — contest that the three who started the campaign did not intend to insult a religion.
