Product Hunt, the Reddit for What’s New in Tech, Is Now an App

Product Hunt, which lets users upvote new software products a la Reddit, is debuting an iOS app.

If you like to keep close tabs on what Silicon Valley is up to, you probably know Product Hunt, the site that serves up a daily list of new software products and services, ranking them with Reddit-like upvotes.

Product Hunt now has a product of its own, an iOS app that brings an enhanced experience to iPhone users.

“People come to the site multiple times a day, but the mobile experience isn’t great right now,” says Ryan Hoover, Product Hunt founder. “We wanted to give people an easy way to browse what’s new when you’re on your way somewhere.”

The design of Product Hunt is pretty basic, but the app adds a few mobile conveniences. The “submit product” button is prominently in the top right of the main screen, you can easily switch to a view of the most recent submissions (as opposed to the most popular), and tapping on an entry brings up easy ways to share it.

There’s a tab for notifications, but Hoover says those won’t be active at launch. Although there’s no Android app, he says third parties in the Product Hunt community have been working on them ever since the site opened up its API earlier this month.

Product Hunt started last November as a mere email list and became a full-blown site after the Thanksgiving holiday. Since then it’s experienced healthy growth — a 70% increase in visitors every month since January, Hoover says. The products highlighted are feeling the boost, too: Hoover says sites at the top of the leaderboard have gotten spikes of up to 10,000 new visitors — impressive traffic for a budding startup.

Once the app is fully operational, Hoover says he has ambitions to take Product Hunt beyond just tech. However, he concedes the model won’t work for every traditional “vertical.”

“There needs to be an overlap without existing audience,” Hoover says. “If we started with fashion tomorrow, that would be difficult. We want to have product categories that people are passionate about. One example is video games. If you look at mobile gaming alone, there’s a need for a better way to curate those products.”

Product Hunt hasn’t quite had its “Secret” moment yet, but there’s no question it’s a go-to destination for the Silicon Valley startup crowd. Can the onetime side project become a full-blown destination? Getting into its readers’ pockets is probably a good first step.

Is This the New Google Maps App for iOS?

Is-this-the-new-google-maps-app-for-ios-rumor--c7c1ff9719

Google Maps Paris 640A San Francisco-based developer posted screenshots on his blog late last night that are allegedly from the Google Maps app for iOS 6, which is rumored to be in the works.

The developer, Ben Guild, doesn’t reveal how he obtained the screenshots in his blog post, and they’re quite blurry (a sample is below). Nonetheless, they clearly show some kind of map app for iOS that has Google iconography (the car icon is a giveaway). Parts of one image have been redacted, but the LTE indicator is visible, which shows the device in question is an iPhone 5.

Without citing a source, Guild says the app is in “alpha,” and he reveals a few tidbits about the upcoming Google Maps app: It will be vector-based, like Apple Maps; it will feature two-finger rotation to any angle; it’s “super-fast” and it will support the larger screen of the iPhone 5.

Whether this is a true leak or just some developer trying to attract attention to his apps is up to you, but Google has been rumored to be working on a new version of Google Maps for iOS 6. Earlier reports suggested it may already have been finished and was just awaiting Apple’s approval.

Apple has been taking a lot of heat over its new Maps app for iOS, which is demonstrably inferior to the old Google Maps app in many ways. It has no street view or public-transit directions, and it’s said to serve up erroneous data much more often than Google’s service. The problems even led the company to issue a rare public apology. However, its 3D renderings and offline viewing abilities have earned praise, plus it features turn-by-turn navigation.

Do you think these Google Maps screenshots are the real deal? Have your say in the comments.

Capture Ghosts at Foursquare Spots With "Ghostbusters" iOS Game

Capture-ghosts-at-foursquare-spots-with-ghostbusters-ios-game-b50cf35b27

Something strange in your neighborhood? Instead of picking up your iPhone to call the Ghostbusters, bust those ghosts yourself in the new Ghostbusters: Paranormal Blast game.

Ghostbusters: Paranormal Blast [iTunes link] uses alternate reality to allow you to chase down and capture ghosts near you. It’s a novel game allowing players to strap on their own Proton Packs and get after ghosts around them.

When you load the app, you’ll see Foursquare locations around you that have been “haunted” by ghosts. Click on one, and a ghost will appear in front of you on your phone’s display. They don’t just sit idly by; these ghosts are feisty, and will attack you while you zap them with your Proton Pack. You’ll have to move your phone or iPad to keep the ghosts on the screen — which makes you look a bit silly in the process — as they track to different parts of your camera to avoid capture. Once the ghost is weakened, slide your Ghost Trap beneath them to add them to your collection.

Ghosts captured earn you money and achievements, which you can use to unlock new missions and upgrade your gear. The ghosts get tougher as the game progresses, too, and new ones are available as you visit new areas in real life. You’ll even run into the Ghostbusters nemesis Slimer in your travels.

Ghostbusters: Paranormal Blast, created by Toronto-based XMG Studios, retails for $1.99 for both iPad (though only models with a camera can play) and iPhone.

After Malware Scare, Apple Makes First Appearance at Black Hat Conference

After-malware-scare-apple-makes-first-appearance-at-black-hat-conference-046d2654ac

Apple will make its first appearance at computer security conference Black Hat on Thursday when Dallas De Atley, Manager of the Platform Security team at the company, takes the stage to talk about key security technologies in iOS.

Typically absent for security conferences, the move is a significant one, and one that shows Apple realizes that its operating system is vulnerable and that the company could benefit from the input of a group of people who have the main goal of revealing those vulnerabilities.

The first iOS malware app was confirmed earlier this month. Called “Find and Call” the app would have users upload all of their contact information to a server that would them spam all of their contacts with messages that appeared to come from the victim’s phone.

Hackers have started to pay more attention to the OSX platform. Previously thought to be free from viruses and attacked, Apple computers have started to see a rise in malicious software attacks.

Black Hat has been going on for the past 15 years. The conference brings together thought leaders from different facets of the information security worlds – everyone from corporate and government employees to academic and underground researchers – to help attempt to “define tomorrow’s security landscape.”

Since its initial conference in 1997, Black Hat has expanded its conference from a single event each year in Las Vegas to a series of conferences around the world in locations such as Abu Dhabi, Barcelona and Washington DC.

Microsoft first made an appearance at the conference in 1998, and Google took the stage in 2010. While most of the speakers at the Black Hat conference have a detailed description of their planned discussion topic, Apple’s description merely says it will “discuss key security technologies in iOS.”

The conferences are vendor-neutral and bring together some of he brightest and most prestigious names in the space for briefings as well as hands-on, high-intensity, multi-day trainings provided by some of the most respected experts in the world. Attendees can also receive formal certifications while attending the conference.

What do you think about Apple participating in the Black Hat conference? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
