I got twentysomething problems but an app ain’t one.
1. Waze
Waze is no ordinary navigation app. Like others, it reports real-time traffic information. But, based on reports from users, it also provides info on road debris, cops ticketing nearby, the cheapest gas in your area, and updates on your friends’ locations when they’re driving to the same destination.
Available for iPhone, Android, and Windows Phone.
2. Afterlight
2013 was the year of no one telling you how they got those cool white borders around their Instagram photos. Take control of your life today with this photo-editing app, and get new filter and lighting options to enhance your online presence.
Available for iPhone.
3. Group Xit
NBC
One of the imminent frustrations of your twenties is being stuck in unwanted group texts with people who will not let the “brunch from three weeks ago” message die. Group Xit allows you to stealthily leave the group message or even just to mute anyone who is annoying you in particular, doing wonders for your sanity.
Available for Android (iPhone users fear not — the next iOS update reportedly will include this feature anyway).
4. Seamless
NBC
With Seamless, everywhere delivers. It has selections from 12,000-plus menus and operates in some cities that don’t have many alternative delivery options. You never have to leave your home again.
Available for iPhone, iPad, Android, and Blackberry.
5. Drizly
ABC
It’s just like Seamless…but for BOOZE. Drizly delivers beer, wine, and liquor right to your door in just 20–40 minutes. Great if you’re having a party and suddenly realize you’ve severely underestimated how much alcohol you need.
Available for iPhone and Android.
6. NYT Now
Written by New York Times editors, NYT Now sends you summaries of the top stories of the day. Never again look like an uniformed rube in front of your co-workers.
Available for iPhone.
7. Happy Hours
Paramount Pictures
This app geolocates the nearest happy hour deals for you. There are lots of competing apps that serve the same function, but this one has a ton of different cities and an easy-to-use interface.
Available for iPhone, Android, Windows Phone, and Blackberry.
Correction: This post originally included another app recommendation, but readers pointed to the fact that it hasn’t been updated in 4 years and is now extremely slow.
8. Private Photo Vault
NBC
Private Photo Vault does just one thing: It puts a passcode on photos you want to keep private. If you have nosy friends who are always doing a lot of swiping, this will help to keep them out of your biznass.
Available for iPhone. Coming soon to Android.
9. Scoutmob
Universal Pictures
Scoutmob is awesome because it not only sends information on deals in the area, but also has plenty of “app-only” deals that you have to be a Scoutmob user to redeem. Additionally, it provides a well-curated list of local events worth checking out and a delightful “stache-cam” photo tool with options like “Thom Sellique” and “Vested Barkeep.”
Available for iPhone, Android, and Windows Phone.
10. Dark Sky
Paramount Pictures
While other weather apps tell you the percent chance that it will rain or snow, Dark Sky uses a weather radar (which you can see on a live map) to tell you the minute that precipitation will begin and exactly how long it will last. That means you can plot your early escape from work to avoid the coming storm or go ahead and leave your umbrella at home without fear.
Available for iPhone.
11. Venmo
Fox
Venmo allows you to pay and charge friends on your phone, so you don’t have to be the assholes who split the check six ways every time you go to a restaurant. It also happens to be great for stalking your contacts via their transactions, which show up (without amounts) on a feed in the app.
Available for iPhone and Android.
12. FitBit
FitBit is one of the best apps for monitoring “workouts and health” all day, able to track both your passive and active exercise, as well as calorie intake, sleep, and other health metrics.
Available for iPhone and Windows Phone.
13. Hotel Tonight
Legendary Pictures
Hotel Tonight provides you with information on the best values for unsold rooms at various hotels and allows you to book them last minute from your phone. Perfect for spontaneous trips.
Available for iPhone, Android, and Windows Phone.
14. Zombies, Run!
Universal Pictures
Zombies, Run! is an interactive combination of a virtual zombie apocalypse game and a fitness app that requires you to run at certain intervals in order to achieve goals and avoid being eaten by the undead. Amazing if you need motivation to go for a run and also want to feel like a kid again.
Available for iPhone and Android.
15. Mixology
IFC
Mixology is a handy source for a ton of mixed drink and cocktail recipes. But what’s really great about this app is the “Liquor Cabinet” tab, which allows you to input whatever options you have on hand and then see the (typically many) drink options you have. It’s really all about expanding your horizons.
Available for iPhone and Android. Coming soon to Windows Phone.
16. Will Call
shootingbowsandarrows.tumblr.com
Will Call is probably the most efficient means of getting concert tickets. They send you notifications when shows you may be interested in are coming up, and then let you purchase tickets with just two clicks. With their “Bar Tab” feature, you can even purchase drinks at participating venues without a card, just by saying your name at the bar.
Available for iPhone and Android in NYC, L.A., and SF.
17. Hinge
So yes, you already have Tinder, but you probably use it primarily as a game of lightning speed “hot or not” while you’re procrastinating at work. Hinge beats Tinder for IRL dating by giving you just a small “batch” of possible matches every day (so you’ll actually look at their profiles) and because they have to be in your extended social network, which cuts way down on the amount of sorting through riff-raff.
Available for iPhone and Android.
