This Professor"s Vodka May Be The First Of Its Kind To Not Cause Hangovers

A bioengineering professor has created a type of vodka that lessens morning hangovers.

Johannes Van Leeuwen, a bioengineer and professor at Iowa State University, developed IngeniOz, a 100 percent pure vodka drink that claims to leave drinkers with less of a hangover than other brands.

IngeniOz is manufactured through a process created by Van Leeuwen at the Iowa Distilling Co. in Cumming, IA.

Recently, the vodka started showing up in stores throughout the state. In 2012, shortly after Van Leeuwen created the process for the vodka, he founded OZ Spirits.

IngeniOz, which uses Iowa corn, claims there are fewer impurities in its vodka than other brands, making it higher quality, easier to drink and less likely to provide a hangover.

Research shows that the more congeners, or impurities found in alcohol, the more likely the drink is to cause a hangover. The Globe Gazette claims Smirnoff has eight impurities, Grey Goose has 14 and Absolut has 16.

Bill Astor, one of OZ Spirits’ cofounders, said their in-depth process is extremely important to their success:

We researched the bottle so we could find the cleanest bottle possible. We feel like we’ve got something, it has no impurities.

One bottle costs $24, but currently can only be found in Iowa. IngeniOz plans to sell its vodka in Illinois and Minnesota soon, but if demand for the hangoverless alcohol rises, it may have to expand much sooner.
